About this item

  • A Professional digital tracking force gauge designed for vinyl record purist's interested in precise measurement of vertical tracking force (VTF) at the correct vertical tracking angle (VTA). When used with the detachable cantilevered extension arm, the gauge closely approximates the vertical position of the stylus on the surface of a vinyl record when it is playing on a turntable- providing accurate “record-level” measurements of tracking force.
  • For optimal accuracy, tracking force should be measured at the same vertical position as the record surface. With Riverstone's VTF gauge's patented design (US Patent D878232), tracking force is measured 2 mm - 3 mm from the surface of a turntable mat - the height of a stylus tip resting on an LP record (LP's have a thickness range of 1.9 - 2.9 mm). With less expensive gauges, the measurement distance is typically 6 mm to 9 mm.
  • Precision strain gauge sensor provides 0.005 g measurement resolution and accurate measurements over the entire calibration range of the VTF gauge. To ensure accurate VTF measurement, our VTF gauges undergo a rigorous multi-point calibration procedure to verify the linearity, repeatability and accuracy of the VTF measurement. We have confidence in our gauges and provide TWO calibration masses (5g and 20g) to verify the readings at any time and also allow for future re-calibration if needed.
  • Manufactured using non-magnetic materials to minimize interactions with MM and MC cartridges. The housing of the VTF gauge is manufactured from a durable plastic. The cantilevered extension arm is made from a non-ferromagnetic grade stainless steel and the locking screw of the extension arm is made from brass. A polymer pad protects the stylus tip and allows stylus centering on the measurement platform.
  • Riverstone Audio Tracking Force Gauges are covered by our no-nonsense THREE-YEAR WARRANTY. The gauge is designed with two levels of battery protection, including auto-turnoff of the display and automatically powering off of the circuit after 60 to 120 seconds of inactivity. A detailed instruction manual (in English) is provided. Includes a tin storage box to protect the VTF gauge when not in use. PLEASE NOTE: *****Requires one AAA ALKALINE battery (SORRY, BATTERY IS NOT INCLUDED)*****.

Product Description

Riverstone Audio's Record-Level tracking force gauge is designed for vinyl record purists interested in more precise measurement of vertical tracking force (VTF). For accurate VTF measurement, the stylus tip should be at the same vertical position as the record surface - that is, at "record level". With Riverstone's professional VTF gauge, vertical tracking force is measured 2 mm to 3 mm from the surface of a turntable mat or platter - which is the height of a stylus tip resting on an LP record (LP's have a thickness range of 1.9 mm to 2.9 mm). Less expensive gauges typically have a stylus tip measurement distance between 6 and 10 mm – which can lead to errors in VTF measurement.

No need to remove your platter mat or prop up the stylus gauge off the platter - the cantilevered extension arm precisely places the stylus tip at the correct height and gives accurate measurement down to 0.005 g - SIMPLE, ACCURATE and HASSLE-FREE!

This is a very high-quality product for the price - it has premium packaging and protective tin for the device. The scale is usable by both beginners and experts alike - the instructions are detailed and easy to follow. I was initially considering buying a cheaper scale but decided to buy one that was a bit more pricey, and I have no regrets! The device worked great for re-calibrating my old dual-626 record player. I was pleased when I noticed the measurements from the device matched the weights listed on the tone-arm adjustment knobs and anti-skating wheel. The product has an auto-sleep mode so while you're setting things up to use the scale it doesn't waste battery. Its lightweight, although you probably could not put it in your pocket, and it quickly provides measurement of the applied force. The case that is provided is about 3"x4" and it has protective foam to protect it from any mishaps. You can put a provided cover and slipcase on the device to put it in your pocket if desired - the scale itself is smaller than a typical smart phone. The only downside is that it doesn't come with a triple-A battery, but at this price, I can live with that! It requires one AAA battery...I used a rechargeable one and it worked just fine. I did remove the battery after use to avoid battery leakage.

I have used several tracking force gauges in the past, all of them with two problems: their measuring platform is thicker than the records I play (in actuality, thicker than any records) and the measuring platform is magnetic, creating a problem that as your cartridge approaches the platform, the weight reading goes negative. My solution on the first one is to increase the VTA on the arm so the cartridge seats on the scale evenly as it would seat on a record. This is a pain as you have to adjust the VTA twice, to match the height of the measuring platform and then back to match the thickness of records once you have completed the weight adjustment. To address the negative weight reading you have to use the tare function on the scale. This is difficult as you need to do it with the stylus as close as possible to the platform as you can. This is easier said than done as you will still be off somewhat. The Riverstone Audio Precision Record Level Turntable Stylus Tracking Force Pressure Gauge addresses both of these problems. It is less costly than the competition (when you consider the accurate scales only) and highly effective. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This thing is cool. I really like it and it works exactly as advertised. It is very sensitive though, don't even breathe near it or the scale jumps. I am new to this level of record enjoyment so this is a little intimidating to use at first, but watch the youtube video. They break it down to the point they show you how to open the battery hatch, install a battery and then close it. I feel if you need the amount of help that this is too advanced a tool for you, but they are very informative and go over every detail with you. After all the anticipation, research and playing with it the only thing I was disappointed in was how quickly I was able to set the toner arm weight. I felt like there was going to be fireworks and a bigger show than there was. Highly recommend this for everyone from the overly anal experts to the nervous to touch anything novices.

As the metroligist indicated in another review it is important to distinguish the difference between display digits, which is often called "resolution", from repeatability; and finally, either of these from accuracy. This device is far better in practical use than most of the mechanical devices out there, like the venerable shure stylus force gauge, and per the main design feature of this unit, it is much easier to measure at the proper vertical position of the tonearm. As far as the resolution vs repeatability vs accuracy: two and a half digits of display resolution are given, which means the final digit is either 0 or 5. Now ITO repeatability the unit varied by approximately plus or minus the hundredth digit when measured with disturbed 5g weight placements, though I did not compute the variation specifically. So accuracy cannot be better than that, as any "systematic error" is added to indicate "accuracy". Now, assuming the 5g weight is precise per standard, the calibration was within 0.005 g of that out of the box before recalibrating. So we could say my sample is most likely accurate to +/- 0.015 g.That you can even do such an assessment is way beyond most devices in this price class, and what this means is that, for the purpose of setting up your LP deck, it is more than good enough. And it is quite convenient to use for its purpose. The documentation is a lengthy and obstruse for notices; really should be a "quick start" sheet, and a concise version of the text that is provided. But again, overkill is much better than lack of detail, and kudos for that to the maker and marketers.

The unit seems accurate enough but the gauge arm onto which one places the arm, does not stay in place very well. This can cause inaccurate measurements. Other than that, easy to use and does the job for which it's designed.

The Riverstone Gauge is great value for money. It measures the same as my Rega MKII gauge which cost 5 times more. Tested on my Rega P8, under same conditions, you can see that the measures were the same. Having said that the Rega MKII is easier to use as it self calibrates and no attachment is needed to get the measurement (but not worth the significant additional cost in my opinion). Riverstone’ she customer service is 1st rate also, had a question and they replied very quickly. Very happy with the purchase and can readily recommend this to anyone that’s in the market for a tracking force gauge.
