I purchased this system in August 2017. I mainly was looking for something to use in my kitchen to listen to the radio, both AM and FM. Now that I have used it for a few months I can honestly say that I LOVE IT. The radio reception is amazing. I have never owned a Sangean radio before but WOW...they know how to build a radio to get great reception. I know that not all their radios get as good reception as this one but this one is really good. I was impressed. I live in a large urban environment in the Midwest (over 300,000 people) densely packed together. Depending on where you live and what he geography is near your home/office, your results will vary.If you are undecided as to whether to buy this package with the two speakers or the single unit, this is my advice: buy the two speakers. The cost difference is not that great but the sound difference is very noticeable especially when listening to music. I tested the system with only one speaker (didn't attach the second) and realized that the fullness of sound and the clarity of the music was really a full 2 notch difference in quality. I did not expect that but it was. I do want to agree with other reviewers that point out that there is no balance control so that even though you have two speakers, you cannot adjust the balance. That was not a big deal for how I am using the system as the speakers are situation high up above the kitchen cabinets and far away from each other. I had to experiment with about 5 different locations in the kitchen (i.e. moving one speaker farther away and closer and changing angles from the other until the sound quality was how I wanted it). Once I had the locations of the two speakers set with an optimum sound quality, I have never changed them again and they consistently deliver great sound on both talk radio and music. Having the radio up high also freed up counter space and for my arrangement, this works perfectly. I did have it on the counter for a few days to see how it sounded at the height level and that produced excellent sound as well. I just prefer to have it up high above the work space in the kitchen. The unit is wood....both the receiver and auxiliary speaker with metal front. The black is matte black not shiny (i.e. not like a piano black). Please note the dimensions of the receiver and the auxiliary speaker.DIMENSIONS...PLEASE NOTE: This is a tabletop unit so review the dimensions so that you are not surprised. The dimensions listed in the description are different from what I measured on the unit I received. The measurements for the unit I received are:Width: 5 inDepth 9 in (this measurement includes adding an extra inch onto this for cords coming out the back of the units--you will need that extra inch as well as to account for the adjusting ball that holds the FM telescoping antenna on the back of the receiver unit)Height 8.75 inThe speakers are each 7w (14w combined) but they deliver a full sound that competed directly with a much larger wattage system. I was surprised that this Sangean model filled the whole room with a very crisp and clear sound when playing both radio or Bluetooth. I have never had to turn the unit up past normal volume. The remote is excellent and fits in your one hand. Not too big. (see picture)I did not experience any issues with being shocked by the unit when I touched it. I used it on the counter for a few days and this never occurred. However, I use the remote now 100% of the time so I am not touching the receiver at all.I use the remote for EVERYTHING since the remote controls almost all functions. Given the unit are up high on top of my kitchen cabinets, this works great for me. I have had zero issues with the remote. I programmed my pre-set radio stations and set up the unit one time and have never had to redo or change it again. The Bluetooth feature works flawlessly and the sound quality of the Bluetooth is better than radio. I have used it daily and have had 100% satisfaction with the paring and quality of sound. It also allows NFC paring which is very nice. The display has 4 levels of brightness (one is totally off as well---totally black display). You must manually adjust the brightness level so if you do turn off the unit, it will display at the last level of brightness that you chose before you turned the unit off. I don't use it in the bedroom so it makes no difference to me but if you used it in the bedroom, you would probably want to use the lowest level of dim since the blue light display is very bright on the highest setting. The unit also has alarms and snooze functions which I have never used. The display also shows you which station you are listening to and information about the song that scrolls across the display. I find this nice but you are able to change this to show the time or other things if you do not want that scrolling to occur. For example, you can have it always show the time of day instead of the information on the current music selection. You can change this with the remote depending on your preference. Some tips if you buy this unit:1) Set up all your presets for your radio stations. Very happy I got this done once and never had to revisit it.2) Make sure that you space the receiver (not the auxiliary speaker, just the receiver) far apart from the power cord wall wart. On this model, Sangean was very smart as they used a power adapter wart combined with an additional noise regulator This new addition of the noise regulator has helped to solve part of the wall wart noise interference issue that many experience with AM and FM radio. However, there is a trick to this new feature: if you place this power cord wart and noise regulator within 2 feet from the receiver, you will not get optimum radio reception (the noise regulator is permanently attached to the power cord about 4 inches from the wall wart---see picture). I believe the fact that I place my power cord as far as it will stretch away from the receiver is why my AM and FM reception is so good (when stretched out as far from the receiver as possible, it is probably about 3 feet away). These power cord adapters do interfere with radio reception on the AM and FM dial and this is why it is really smart that they added a noise regulator directly onto the power cord. Sangean points out the importance of not placing the receiver too close to this wall wart adapter in a separate sheet enclosed with the system as well as in the manual itself. Please make sure you read all paper works connected with this unit. Also, make sure you do not place the receiver near something which has a strong magnet as the antennas will be negatively compromised by this.3) Like I mentioned above, play with the spacing of the speakers within the unique environment of the room in which you will use the unit. Adjust the spacing and angles until you get it the way you want it. I also used the loudness adjustment and the trebel and base adjustments to get the sound quality I like.4) The AM antenna is a built in Ferrite antennas. If AM reception is important to you know that this unit's AM antenna is really good BUT you have to move the actual receiver unit to change the direction of the antenna. So, if AM reception is important to you, then make sure that you place the receiver in the room in such a way that the reception is optimum for the station/s you want to listen to regularly. This was not an issue with my listening experience but I did make sure that I was receiving the 2 AM stations I wanted to listen to before I fixed the location of the receiver in the room. I then adjusted the auxiliary speaker’s location in respect to the receiver for sound quality. The internal AM antenna in this unit is really powerful if you have owned a Sangean radio in the past and used it for AM reception, you will have the same quality experience from this radio's AM antenna. IN ADDITION, you also have the ability to add your own external AM antenna to this unit as there is a connection on the back of the receiver just for that (this external AM antenna is not included but if you do need one, you have that option).5) The FM antenna was a bit finicky for me but once I got it telescoped to the right angle, I never had to adjust it again. The FM antenna is your classic telescoping antenna and works perfectly for my use. Unlike the AM antenna, you cannot add a separate external FM antenna to this unit as there is no connection on the back of the unit to do so.6) The DSP tuner that Sangean installs in their radios really is AMAZING and you can immediately tell the difference in the ability of the DSP tuner to grab a radio signal and hold on to it at the most minuscule degree. I was impressed. In addition, you also have the ability to 'narrow' your tuning choices with a very sensitive calibration----very useful for AM and talk stations reception. I used this feature once on a talk radio show and the difference this made in reception and sound quality was remarkable.7) You can connect external devices to this unit but not USB or other memory cards. I have connected my phone and computer to this and it played music with no problem. You can also connect headphones to this (the plug is in the back of the receiver for both the auxiliary device and headphones...kind of an inconvenience but not a huge deal ). There also is a spot for connecting a subwoofer to the unit but there is no need to do this and the unit really, in my opinion, would not be able to handle the power of a strong subwoofer. It's nice Sangean gives you the option but I don't see it as practical need.I also enclosing pictures of 1) the remote that came with the unit 2) the page from the manual describing the back and front receiver connections and buttons, 3) the features on the remote and 4) a picture of the power cord wall wart with the attached noise regulator. I hope that is helpful. All in all, I am 100% satisfied with this purchase given the amazing radio reception on both AM and FM, sound quality and overall performance and price point, I highly recommend this Sangean model with the auxiliary speaker and am impressed with Sangean’s quality on this unit.

Nice overall sound quality - decent bass, and produces large room volume without distortion. Highly selective tuner gets a clean signal for critical listening - not as common as you'd think, especially if you live in an urban setting with many closely adjacent channels. Mine seems to temporarily lose some of its status and programmed time settings, display settings, if you walk across carpet and touch the power button (static discharge?) but dpes not lose the station settings. Be sure to touch something to discharge yourself before operating the radio. Bluetooth connection is easy enough and works well, important to me. Some of the programming and setup is a bit arcane, but not too bad. May take you an hour to do it all. Forget trying to use the automated time setting, as it produces some strange offsets that I could not overcome, but you can simply input the date and time manually. If this is really wood, I am surprised, seems like a solid plastic case. It was a good value.

This is actually the SECOND Sangean WR-50 FM-RBDS/AM/Bluetooth Wood Cabinet Table Top Radio I bought, as I was so pleased with the first one, and the time came when I needed another radio to cure my listening blues in another room, and there wasn't a second thought as to which one I would consider purchasingThe quality incorporated into the radio, along with thoughtful, useful features make it a delight to own.The sound quality is exceptional !! and you have the ability to adjust the tone from both the unit & the remote, which I like very much. The reception for AM & FM (from a guy who lives in a suburb just outside of NYC proper) is pretty good even without an external antenna, but when you add one- WOW! Even Better!!!I know some have bitched about not having a balance control, and yea- that would be a nice to have feature, but given the other bells & whistles this radio offers, and designed more as a table top /counter top radio, where (by design) when paired with the accessory matching speaker if you opt for that, the stereo imaging of the device is pretty sweet, and the accompanying plug to use to match the base unit is (in my opinion) more than sufficient to provide a very enjoyable stereo sound field, for an average size room to casual listening.I really would highly recommend the Sangean WR-50, and have found it to be a pleasure to own, everything from the blue tooth connectivity, to the auto clock synch, the great remote, & preset options which make it easy to set & store a station, are very well designed. The only reason I gave the brightness 4 of 5 stars, is I noticed on the second unit I bought (which was about a year and change after the first unit) that the board which sports the lcd display seems to have some bleed through on the circuit board which adds a little extra brightness on the side of the display which my first unit didn't have, whether it's a manufacturing defect, or just a different circuit board used? who knows, but while it's not a major issue at all, and more something I just happened to notice, to me, it warranted giving that rating - because if/whenshould someone from Sangean ever actually read these reviews & has some knowledge of the manufacturing process, and recognizes that someone pointed this out - they may go "Oh yea- that model # is when we changed vendors for that part, and thought we could save a few pennies - but someone noticed an issue, perhaps in the future, when these boards run out, we should consider going back to the previous vendor (what can I say, I'm optimistic in my thinking like that)but certainly not a deal breaker by any means- I give this Sangean WR-50 MY 5 Stars & Then some if I could, because the quality over all & value, are somethings I rarely experience now a days, and after researching this device for a few days prior to my original purchase of the first unit, I knew, for my needs, this was THE ONE! I wanted.

I purchased the 50P (two speaker) unit from Amazon.ca in November 2016. The Sangean WR-50P is a solid table radio. Certainly it is better than most clock and mid range consumer radios for music playing but I'm not amazed like other reviewers seem to be.Pros - This radio has astounding FM reception, it really is second to none - I have had no problems with AM reception either, despite other reviews and warnings - Sound quality is very good - this is an excellent table radio for most music - The radio can operate just fine with one speaker if you're tight on money or spaceNeutrals - The radio needs to be placed at ear height for best sound quality, otherwise you're cranking the volume to awful levels - Bass is very heavy, even with loudness off and bass reduced to negative 4 or 5 - some songs are muddy, others jarring to the ear - Only suited to small rooms with minimal extraneous noise - great for bedrooms or studies, and not for kitchensCons - Near useless remote - you have to be pointing exactly precisely straight into the IR receiver for it to work - The radio loses your settings any time it is unplugged, and doing the settings isn't totally straightforward - Bluetooth only remembers one pairing - if you have more than one device, you'll have to pair it again each and every time you connect - Wires, wires, wires - awful power brick, and of course the slave speaker needs an RCA cord - Price, nearly $300 in Canada, with no CD players, youch...you're getting close to the bottom price point of more elite unitsWould I recommend the Sangean WR-50P? Sure, if you want good quality radio, you're not playing bass-heavy music, you're in a small room, you never want to put on a CD and you can stash this thing on a higher shelf. But if you have the means ... consider saving up a bit more, as you aren't that far from a higher-end system with a CD player, or the beginnings of a multi-year investment in a home-wide system.

Sound and reception are quite good .. I have little personally to compare it to .. however, a brother indicated that he preferred this sound over the comparable Tivoli model that he owns
