Knit of 100% soft and breathable Merino wool, this cardigan is incredibly versatile, keeping your little one dry and cool on hot summer days and warm when temperatures drop. As a plus, the cardigan incorporates wooden football buttons and a crewneck for easy layering. The cardigan takes inspiration from the traditional Aran sweaters worn by fishermen in the late 19th century during their sea ventures. Besides offering warmth and breathability, each stitch tells a story of the islands and its people: the cable and basket are symbols of strength, the honeycomb is a representation of sweet rewards after hard work, and the moss suggests the idea of abundance.

We got this for my tall 6.5 year old to get through these coldest months of winter as she had outgrown her previous Aran cardigan and it was passed down. This cardigan has nicely densely knitted cables, is soft and very warm. The parsnip color is a nice neutral that can stand to get more wear before it needs a wash. I did not realize it is superwash merino, which I am not a fan of. I would prefer natural wool that I can air out and handwash, it wears better through dirt and spills because of the lanolin. At any rate, I would not machine wash this even though it’s superwash.Fit runs a bit small, my daughter is a solid size 6/7 in HA clothes and the size 7/8 just fits her on sleeve length. We might be able to get another winter out of it, but it would be little short on the arms. Body length is great for keeping warm. It layers well under a boiled wool jacket.Update 1/29/25: After the first hand wash in Eucalan, I found a dropped stitch near the shoulder. Luckily, I knit and mend, so I can fix this. But I shouldn’t have to. A machine knitted the cardigan and quality control should have caught the dropped stitch. Big bummer. Otherwise it washes well. Gently, by hand.
