Decided to purchase this product to use as the deploy and retrieval unit for 500 mL plastic sample bottles to collect groundwater samples from open wells. Put two weighted fishing weights and a carabiner one foot apart from each other to cause the bottle to be pulled under the water and easily remove the sample bottle and we transition from well to well, works amazing for out of the ordinary design.

I mounted this to a cutting board and mounted to the track mounts on my kayak for use with an anchor. I cut off the gate so it would work with thicker line (I use stopper knots in my line for a quick release and retrieval system) and replaced the line with 35' of paracord. Works really well. I still haul up the anchor line by hand because I don't want to put too much lateral force on the cutting board and snap it, but it's easy to wind up the line and keep it from being a tangled mess around my legs in the kayak.

Seen a review and a video of someone talking about turning this into a kayak anchor reel. It did the job well I removed the rope it originally came with and replaced with 550 cord and so far the wife and I are pleased with the job it does.

Did six shore dives in Hawaii last week with this reel and a dive flag. I saw three other people with reels that looked exactly like this one so the design is a popular one. I can not give this reel five stars because it is not FOOL proof. I had lots of slack on the line and reeled it in without paying attention, some line wrapped between the black handle and the reel causing a jam on the next dive at 30 feet of line. After the dive the reel could be repaired with a large screwdriver to remove the reel and then the knot. Reel is good value for the money just be careful and inspect it before every dive.

My only notes on this product would be to make sure the line doesn't get caught between the backboard and the blue circle when reeling it back up. Took me an hour to do so and had to cut away a lot of the line.

I bought this to use as an ice fishing rattle reel. Decent quality, with thick cord. The spring release on it is only a plastic spring, which I can foresee as the first thing to go. So far so good after 2 weekend trips this year.
