I bought this for my 13 year old granddaughter because she needed one for 9th grade Algebra. This calculator supposedly has over 400 functions, trust me no one teaches you four hundred functions!! What I learned, because I'm taking algebra in college, is that you need to go to the Sharp website and download the user manual. The manual explains how the function works, and the different programmable modes for different types of calculations. Then the manual gives you examples to practice. After you practice with your new calculator, you just may get close to knowing a few hundred functions! Also look on Youtube for tutorials, the best ones are from Sharp-South Africa division.

The EL506 has been around for years. This particular version is really good:(1) Larger number display is easy to read, especially for older eyes.(2) It is completely algebraic. Other calcs make you go 30 cos, which is postfix notation. All functions on this model are done just like you'd write on paper, cos 30. You don't even need parenthesis.(3) Build quality and accuracy of functions are quite good.(4) Cost is nominal. I buy 2 or 3 at a time. If you lose one somewhere, you're not out mega$ like an HP.(5) The one caveat to this model is you MUST read the manual for examples of syntax!(6) To sum up, if you want an inexpensive but good scientific by your pc or in your pocket, give this a try.

This is a GREAT engineering and scientific function calculator. The use of it is very logical and also follows the logic path of all SHARP calculators. This is a must for math majors!

I own a Ti-84 Plus, but this EL-506TS gas become my go-to calculator for most everything. Yes the TI is more powerful (and programmable, which this calculator is not) but it's also far more complex to use, with much wading through menus and submenus to do more than basic stuff. The EL-506 is much easier to use and navigate. I've owned the calculator for a couple months now and I'm quite happy with it.One feature I particularly like is the dual-power solar and battery. No need tochange batteries at inconvenient times.Although it's billed as a "12-digit" calculator, ten digits is more like it. The eleventh and twelfth digits show up only as the exponent in scientific notation.The biggest drawback, in my opinion, is the documentation. The sheet that comes with the calculator is an unreadable micro font. And this calculator absolutely requires a manual.The inside of the slip-on cover has the URL and QR code for Sharp's support/manuals page which is at least readable. But a Google search can come up with a better manual, OperationGuide_EL506TS.pdf, on Sharp's website.Overall I'm quite happy with the purchase.

Really stupid of Sharp not to include the quick reference card like they used to, which is absolutely essential since all the constants and conversions are coded with a value.
