this is a great trash can unless you have a dog who figures out how to open it, so I had to fix it so he couldn't move it bychaining it to the wall, it is a good can, the best that I found & worth the money

I'll keep this short and sweet. Our 75lb Labradoodle is currently on a very strict diet for 6 weeks to determine if he has a food allergy. Needless to say he hates it, and despite his very good training and usually impeccable behavior, he has begun knocking over the garbage can to rummage for scraps when we're not home (see pic). NAUGHTY DOG!!! Obviously we can't have this going on every day so I ordered this can right away in hopes that it would put Mr. Dog in his place. I have one word for how well it works: Checkmate! This is a very big, very smart dog and he is no match for this garbage can! HOORAY! It is well built, heavy duty, well designed and the lock keeps the lid securely in place even if he knocks it over. This is our first time with a step to open can. I have always been skeptical because it seems like the step function always breaks. So far so good with this one! I think the way it's designed it will last for a very long time. The lid opens fast but shuts slow, which isn't a problem for us. You can also still open and shut it the old fashioned way with your hand which I appreciate. It looks about as elegant as a garbage can CAN look without costing a fortune. I love the wall separator feature (I don't know the technical name for it) but it's really handy in keeping it the perfect distance from our cabinetry so it has no trouble opening and closing and doesn't rub up against the wood. Another thing I LOVE is that it came with a package of sample trash bags to use! So far I really like those as well and will probably be putting them on my Amazon Subscribe and Save list! The can comes with a 5 year warranty which is AWESOME! Most importantly, this can holds a LOT of trash!! Most of the step cans I've seen in stores are little circles or squares that are way too small for our needs. I LOVE the size of this can! See side by side comparison pics to our old Sterilite can. The lock works wonders and not only keeps the dog out but my autistic 5 year old as well!I only have 2 minor complaints. The first is that it took a LOT of effort to get the lid to snap into place when I put it together for the first time, but now that it's on it is extremely secure. The second is that it's nearly impossible to lock and unlock the lid with one hand. That's a big bummer, but certainly not a deal breaker. If I could take off half a star for that I would.I never thought I would be a huge fan of a garbage can, but I can officially say that I am now! Thanks for doing it right, simplehuman! Hopefully this helps someone else with a similar problem. And for the record, I did NOT receive this for free or at a discount. I paid full price for it, just like you.

I never thought I'd get excited over a trash can, but I love this can. For the past several years, I have been using a very expensive electric / battery powered touchless stainless steel tall kitchen can. It worked great for the first few years, and then gradually over time, the lid had more trouble rising and stayed up for only a couple of seconds, so I decided I was going to go low tech this time and buy a can that had a foot pedal. If you are reading this review, you are doing exactly what I did. I wanted a decent can at a reasonable price that got good reviews from people not paid or incentivized by the manufacturer to review them. I paid full price for this can, which I bought from Amazon, and my opinion is totally unbiased.I wish I had bought this can earlier. It's light weight, but sturdy. The only negative I found was what others experienced: you have to really press down to get the lid to lock on to the can, but it's doable with little fuss as long as you understand that. It's the only assembly required. The can came in a really large box with a lot of packing material, which was wasteful. It also came with the lid propped on the top of the can -- just not attached. It seems like it would be easy for the manufacturer to just attach the lid at the factory if it is going to be shipped with the lid on top of it instead of having a lot of reviewers complain about problems they encountered attaching the lid. Easy fix and the only negative.The can comes with a supply of bags made to fit and you can order more from the manufacturer, but the great news is that any standard 13 gallon tall kitchen garbage bag will work just fine. For some reason, I thought there was a ring or rim to secure and cover the bags, but there is not. The fit is tight enough and secure enough that you just turn the top of the bag over the rim of the can and it easily holds in place, and you really can't see the bag because most of it is covered by the lip of the lid.To open the can, press the foot pedal. The lid will stay open several seconds and then slowly close by itself. If you want the lid to stay open, pull it open by hand instead of using the foot pedal, and then close it manually when you are ready. Easy. This can will not sit flush with the wall because there is a small bumper in the back that allows for the space needed for the lid to open fully, so be aware of that when making location decisions based on size. You'll need to allow a couple of inches of clearance from the wall.I have a large puppy who is interested in everything, including the trash. My favorite thing about this can is that you can lock the lid shut. Push the silver locking mechanism toward the back of the can to lock and pull it toward you to unlock. The lock will hold even if you tip the can over. Now, I don't have to worry about my dog getting into the trash anymore. The matte finish on the can means no fingerprints (or nose prints), so you won't be constantly wiping it down. I wish I had bought this can years ago.

I love this garbage can! It's large, easy to use, good looking and well made. I have this now replacing a swing top lid on my old one. It was always messy getting things in and holding it open. This is the exact opposite. Step on the floor control and the lid is wide open and wide! No problems getting anything in and the lid closes in a slow motion fashion. It fits tight to a wall and is wider than deep so it's appearance is better integrated with the wall. Best I've ever owned. My 45litre glad bags fit perfectly.

My sister had one of these and I just needed one. We have a 65 lbs standard poodle who seems to think that the garbage is for him when nobody is around. When I saw my sisters had a lock on the lid I ordered myself one. He can tip it over and it stays locked! He can't open the lid with his snout due to the lock. Besides that I do love the Grey over the black. I just use Glad size regular bags and they fit amazing. My sister uses the Glad size large and it works great for her. I definitely recommend this can!

We have used many kitchen trash containers over our marred life.This by far is the nicest and easiest to use.It has a great step to open the container with and when the lid closes, it closes gently without slamming.Inserting a full-size garbage bag is so easy and it stays in place.When it comes time to remove the bag, it simply slides right out! No insideous plastic liner to wrestle with as you try to remove the bag.Well worth the money!A little tip for odour control with kitchen trash containers.Before you start to use the trash container or even if you have used one for a while, pour some coffee beans in the bottom of the can. The plastic bag makes an airtight seal, so the beans retain that nice coffee bean smell when you remove the bag. You just rinse the can out occasionally like you normally do, BUT that bad odour that garbage cans inherently create? It is gone.Try this garbage can, it is well worth the money and has a great lock to prevent your pets from getting into it!
