The product I bought first was junk, way too small, basically turned to a powdery mess. This product was much larger and worth the purchase. It is messy though when you first go to spread it out, so you may need your dustbuster with you when you do.

My outdoor, propane, fire pit has lava rock in the pan up to the holes in the fire ring. There are ceramic logs over the fire ring. Has a very natural wood fire look when burning. Placed the vermiculite on top of the lava rock, inside the fire ring and under the ceramic logs. Burning propane flames do contact the top of the vermiculite but the vermiculite does not produce an ember effect. This product does not produce the ember effect I get with my indoor gas fire place. The indoor gas fire place has burning natural gas coming up through the vermiculite and fire wool and this produces a very realistic ember effect. The vermiculite did not produce the desired ember effect in my outdoor propane gas fire pit.
