The special ability allows the pillbug to move an adjacent piece (friend or enemy) two spaces up onto itself and then down into another empty space adjacent to itself.

If you play online you often play with this piece and get used to it. The price is very high compared to the other set. And if you are interested in Hive I would get Hive Pocket for the mosquito and the ladybug. I probably don't use the Pillbug to its maximum defensive ability. It can make games of Hive longer.

As the Hive instruction booklet recommends, it's best to learn the game without the expansion pieces that come with Hive Pocket (the Mosquito and Ladybird). But once you've reached the stage where you're playing confidently with the standard pieces, it's best to add all three expansions at the same time - Mosquito, Ladybird and Pillbug.The Pillbug works as a beast of a defensive piece, being able to pick up and move anything it's next to - either shifting your Queen Bee to safety or throwing attacking pieces away. A well-placed Pillbug becomes something you have to really think about neutralising before going for a final attack. It definitely adds a lot to games so buy it ready for when you feel it's time to add the expansions.
