TL;DR - The core instrument is great, but the fit and finish and some of the parts could use improvement.I grabbed one of these to replace a cheap e-bay Chinese viola that the electronics had finally given out on. Overall it's worked out quite well for me, I'm running Chincello strings on it so it's dropped an octave and the sound is very good. The EQ is fine for a two-band EQ, and it's nice to have a volume slider easily accessible. You can hit it with your left or right hand fairly quickly and accurately. To answer a few questions:- There is no external power switch, but it doesn't drain the battery as long as you unplug the cable. That's the trigger to connect the battery, so don't leave a cable plugged in if you're not playing it.- The bow's a piece of junk, yes. It's usable, but crappy.- The tuning pegs aren't great out of the box and the bridge may not be set to your liking; like any other instrument you buy online it's going to need a bit of fiddling (no pun intended). Take it to a luthier for a setup, or watch a few youtube videos and DIY.- If the bridge leans more than a few degrees, the sound will take a nose-dive in quality and/or cut out completely. I thought something was wrong with my home-built amplifier, but in the end realized it was just a bridge adjustment. Make sure the bridge is seated well on the pickup. All in all, a pretty solid instrument, though a little bit pricey. I decided to go for it after burning through a cheaper instrument and haven't regretted it.

Bought this for my son who is apart of a band and thought it's be cool to have an eletric viola to plug straight into a sound system rather than micing it. However, he couldn't get the thing to stay in tune no matter what and ended up breaking two strings within the first three days trying to tune. Looks cool and hopefully will sound good. The bow is also a piece of trash. No matter how many times he turned the end, it wouldn't tighten so he just used his old bow for it. Just be cautious when looking into this.

Be prepared to drop another $200 or so with a good luthier to make this really playable. Probably not bad, as far as online purchases go, but string and tuning peg broke on day one. Also, bridge needs adjustment.

This viola did not work for a single day. It could not be tuned either by my son or by his instructor. I even took it to a musical instruments store and they couldn’t do it. One of its strings tore the first time my son tried to play it. He is a careful player and has never torn a string or damaged his regular viola in all the five years he’s been playing. We finally just had to get rid of this product.

The sound of this electric viola is very good and about the same as much more expensive electric violas. Here is an example of how it sounds: soundcloud.com/maxloh/alien-earthI recorded it with both eq knobs set to the middle (which is default/disabled and sounds best in my opinion). Please note that I mixed the sound of the electric viola with string ensemble libraries, and the e viola is only exposed at the very beginning of the piece. However, it is playing throughout almost the entire piece subliminally. I also layered lots of reverb and eq on it.It sounds very good in the mix; however, it is a bit awkward to play even by a skilled musician. My violist complained that the G string is very difficult to play because the bridge does not separate the G and C strings enough, compared to in standard violas. Also, it is very heavy due to unneeded built-in digital equipment such as the EQ. This is standard for many electric violas, but there are some other high-quality brands that skip the unnecessary EQ knobs which lightens their electric instruments by a lot.

I bought this for my granddaughter for her school electronic band. Despite the reviews, I bought it and the reviews were right. This doesn't stay in tune. We have taken it to certified repairers but the quality of the parts will not keep this instrument in tune. We tried to work with it but found that she could not play in the band with it. Unfortunately, we came to this realization3 days after the return policy ended. I doubt Amazon will cut us any slack, so it's about $400 down the drain.

It came with loose string tensioners and wasn't the quality I thought it would be for the money. My son likes the look though so he wants to keep it

It’s playable and suitable for semi-silent practice with headphones (there sound is still resonant enough to disrupt my wife’s virtual meetings if I play in our studio). The tone is pleasant and it’s nice to have to option to play with an amp or with headphones only. There are 2 main reasons for my 2 star rating: 1) as others have mentioned, at times, the pegs seem impossible to stay in tune. 2) the audio amplification is very fragile and seemed to brake down within months. Whether using headphones or plugging the device into the app, my viola produces amplified sound about 50% of the time. The other times it doesn’t output any sound at all or it generates a electric popping sound that sounds like a ticking time bomb. As using digital output is the only means or producing audible sound, this function really needs to be reliable and it is most certainly not. I would not recommend this product to anyone as a result.
