I can’t afford a Royer R121 so does this clone sound as good or close to a Royer R121? I have no idea because I’ve never tested an R121. I have owned some really nice vintage RCA ribbon microphones and this microphone does hold a candle to them, YES, just maybe not as bright figuratively. Unlike the vintage ribbon microphones. You run this clone with active phantom power. For the price, it sounds great on vocal, guitar, and as a drum overhead. Would a Royer R121 sounds good and most probably better? I’m sure it would but again I’ve never tested one. All I know is if you want to put this next to a Shure SM57 in phase parallel, like many people do with the Royer R121. You could get a similar, if not the same affect as many people do in their recording studios. In all, I have zero complaints, considering the price the quality ratio. No one yet has told me hey that’s not a Royer 121 in my lower budget, recording studio, but they have said “ cool you’ve got a ribbon microphone on my app, and it sounds really warm and punchyâ€. And I just say thank you.

(Edited after more use)For the price, this is about what you'd expect. Even at a lower price it holds up to the old saying that ribbons "sound like real life." Nothing I've recorded sounds "good" or "bad" through this mic – just a fairly flat and organic representation of the real sound. Nothing like my dynamics or condensers which all significantly color the sound. I've found it very useful for recording acoustic guitar, classical guitar, bowed strings (violin, viola, cello, etc,) vocals, AND electric guitar cabinets – so basically anything. It definitely needs a high output mic pre or an inline phantom booster like the Cloudlifter (but not actually the cloudlifter: klark teknik's offerings are better, which I opted for in this case.) The build seems solid so I bought another one for blumlein arrangements and other multi-mic setups.

Has a sound of its own and it's not a bad one. Maybe a bit more noisy than I expected on its own, so I plugged in a line pre-amp and reduced gain on the main preamp, that brought the noise down considerably. Ribbon mics tend to have a low output, hence the increased noise so use an in-line booster and all should be honky dory. Looks a bit like a Royer, though it doesn't really sound like on, doesn't cost like one, either. I do tend to be a bit fussy. Definately a reasonable mic.

First one you could hear a bright loud rattle.Gave another chance and the second one was completely dead on arrival. No signal. Tried different cables. Too bad it looked amazing and first one sounded good with vocals or acoustic but was unusable with guitars or drums.
