Before I bought this, I tried a tiny generic single mantle mini lantern that attaches to backpacking gas cylinders with a mantle sticking up - it had pathetic light output for an incandescent mantle lamp (couldn't read by it!), so I returned it and spent $5 more for this one. Thankfully, this one burns like a Coleman lantern. I think having the mantle hanging allows it to balloon more reliably, which allows more surface area to glow brightly.1) The rated candlepower or watts for the single mantle seems a little low, and it barely costs less than the dual mantle, but you can easily read by the lantern, and only need one good mantle to run it.2) It appears that the mantle will brush the gas tube, but it shrinks down and is perfect.3) I used a peerless mantle 2C-HG from the distribution warehouse - thorium!4) I wish the top hat had a rod and nut so I could light it by removing the top and globe, then replacing... As it is, you need to push kind of hard on the top, and once it's lit, that gets hot. So I will probably try to light it from underneath, as designed.Back in the day, Coleman was king, but a lot of it now is not much to brag about. I don't know if Stansport had a heyday, but this lantern seems a better execution than the modern Coleman, and the price is great!

All great, will get to that in a minute, I did not realize this particular model did not come with a base. Not a deal breaker, my bad in fact for not reading the details or presuming by just a picture. It is all in the details....read them. Anyway back to the great part, it came securely packaged, easy to assemble what little there was to assemble, tied on the mantle, screwed in a bottle and fired it up. I have a coleman as well and they both work fine, but I like this one because of the fully adjustable gas knob. The coleman has a series of clicks, but works fine too, just not quite as adjustable. This one has a bit larger glass area and is very easy to light from the vent in the bottom plate inside the head. The handle is solid as compared to the coleman being a chain, although the chain is longer, this handle is large enough to where you do not feel it being too hot when you handle or move with it lit. Mantles are easy to obtain, use the coleman 21, just tie it on and snip the extra tie material. good to go. I do like both but from a price point this one is it.

Not packed properly in manufacturer's packaging and zero padding added inside of Amazon shipping box. Glass globe arrived shattered. Sent it back, ordering another one. Hopefully Amazon will add at least minimum protective padding to their shipping box this time.

This lantern worked fine for two months. Then, the metal rim that the mantle is attached to, fractured and fell off. I reported this problem to Stansport. This seems to be a problem with other brands of lanterns that I have tried, and Stansport was better than most.
