Product Description

The Starrett S264WB set includes seven center punches with a square shank, and 1/16", 5/64", 3/32", 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", and 1/4" diameter tapered points. The set comes with a round red plastic case for storage. Each punch has a tempered steel shank for strength and a hardened steel point for wear resistance. The shanks are knurled for grip and have a square shape to prevent them from rolling when placed on a work surface.

Center punches make small dimple marks in a workpiece to help guide a drill bit. Manual center punches have a metal shank with a point and are typically tapped with a ball-peen hammer to mark the material. Automatic center punches have an internal spring mechanism that enables them to mark the material without using a hammer, leaving one hand free for steadying the work.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company, founded in 1880, is headquartered in Athol, MA.

I can think of two other things that I put in the same category as these exquisitely machined set of tools: a Sykes Pickavant set of autobody dollies I purchased around 30 years ago (made in England), and a 7803 Dura-Ace triple crankset manufactured by Shimano in Japan (machined totally out of billet and forged aluminum and polished to a mirror finish). Quite simply the objects were works of art, something you were reluctant to put to their intended use.Well Starrett is a big name in machine tools, so I imagine they pulled out all stops looking for a machine shop that met their standards! I presume these are still made in the USA. I see "USA" on the plain white label but it doesn't say specifically where these are made.

I have read that some Starrett stuff is being made offshore now, but regardless, these punches are excellent, and look and feel like quality instruments. The square shape of them means they won't be rolling off onto the floor too. A little pricey, but well worth it. And it's not like you are spending 100s of dollars here - I got mine for less than 60.

I bought this punch set because I wanted some more precision in my drilling. I have used nails to line up a hammer drill but they didn't penetrate the brick and other hard surfaces like these punches and the head of the nails dulled too easy.

This is a nice reliable set of punches. A little expensive but you get what you pay for with tools

They are Starrett and are exactly what I expect from Starrett. Excellent. The only criticism I would give is that the top is flat inside. It allows the shorter center punches to move around a lot if you tip the case over. It would be better if they used something to take up the gap between the shorter punches and the top.
