Upon arrival, I attached the adapter to my monitor cable and plugged the VGA jack end into my laptop -- nothing -- no picture. Upon further research, I learned that I had a DVI-D (Digital) and not a DVI (Digital AND Analog) monitor. For this plug to work, you need a DVI monitor, not a DVI-D monitor like mine. VGA is an analog output, and DVI-D is digital, so this simple adapter will not work in my case.What tripped me up was that the DVI female connector on my old desktop video card was exactly as pictured on this adapter. I thought I was good to go with my existing monitor. However, I should have been looking at the male jack end from the monitor to determine if I had a DVI or DVI-D monitor. For those interested, a DVI-D (Digital only) male jack has a flat bar with no pins surrounding it on one side. From what I have read, a DVI (Digital AND Analog) male jack will have the flat bar with 4 pins surrounding the bar. It's those 4 pins around the flat bar that carry the analog signal that would allow you to use this adapter with the VGA (analog) output of your computer.

Adapter doesn't work. Vga cable works, dvi cable works, monitor works, could be because of older laptop but I don't have anything else legacy to test this out. I used to have so many of these bundled with graphic cards. Wish I kept a few of them since they worked. No idea why this doesn't work.Monitor knows its plugged in but no signal. Monitor has vga hdmi and dvi input. Laptop has vga only, ended up just getting a vga cable. Sucks I have so many dvi cables, was hoping to utilize one of them.

The adapter arrived in timely manner and fit exactly where it was needed. Unfortunately, I think I have a problem elsewhere in the system. I was hooking up two computers to one monitor via a KVM switch. I had a DVI-based monitor and an old DVI-plug Mac that worked beautifully together. Alas, in connecting them through the KVM (which has a VGA plug), I was not able to get video on the old Mac. However, I doubt the problem was the adapter, since I'm using the "mirror image" StarTech adapter to connect a VGA monitor to both machines -- successfully.

Isn’t it always the case that when you buy something new, something old doesn’t work with it, but this adapter helped me to use my old monitor when I knew PC finally I can watch movies at night

Great Price. Can't say anymore, Plugged it in Hooked up cable, no video. New Refurbished HP 8300 SFF Desktop. Don't know if the problem is with the adapter or the Motherboard. I installed a old Video Card from my other computer and used the HDMI Cable and everything worked fine. So I can't tell you if it worked or not. Either the Adapter is bad or the Motherboard Video is bad?
