Our 40+-year-old Jenn-Air TC-406 trash compactor would only stop on the up-swing and we had to manually turn it off. After much troubleshooting, we finally realized it was simply that the ON switch return spring failed. Once twisted to start the compactor, the switch must return to the ON position to stop at the top. As mentioned, the return spring failed, leaving the switch full clockwise, confusing the electronics. We could have simply manually returned the switch to the ON position, and it would work, but we decided to try and replace it.We began searching for a replacement, and luckily, we found that the switches are readily available. However, it's a major price gouge with prices varying from $70-150 for a, in reality, a $5 part. We even searched for used parts with no luck for something reasonably priced. We trust Amazon and its vendors, and the "Supply and Demand Store" who sold the part had a 93% positive rating, and their price was about the best we could find and, with one-day shipping. The alternative to replacing the switch was to keep using the broken switch and turn it back to ON manually or replace the compactor for $1500 so $70 didn't start to sound too bad.The switch arrived as promised in 1 day. It was an easy replacement, with two screws to remove the front panel and one nut that held the switch in place. The wires are color-coded and slide on quick removal and replacement. Be careful to note (take a picture) where the colored wires attach to the old switch before removing it. The replacement switch worked 1st time.We wondered why it was provided with two knobs, and we discovered that the knobs have different orientations to line up with the control markings on the front of the compactor. They are 90 degrees off from each other. Something to be aware of on your install. Toss the unused knob once you figure that out.

This is an exact match for my GE Profile compactor. The knobs that come with it are different, but still worked with my compactor. I didn’t need them so now they will be my back up knobs. Easy to replace and fixed the issue. The old one would not spring back when turned. Got it up and running, can’t be without my compactor working.

Installed the part and first one last about 2 weeks. The replacement last less then 5 months. The design is not good. Contact manufacturer and was told Amazon had to handle issue. Amazon the manufacturer had to. Long story short big waste of money. Terrible customer support. Side note, bought a new one totally different manufacturer and design works great. Stay away from this one.
