Product Description

The Swanson Speed Square was first developed by company founder Albert Swanson in 1925. This innovative tool combines 5 tools into 1: 1. Try Square, 2. Miter Square, 3. saw guide, 4. line scriber, and 5. protractor. The Speed Square is die-cast for durability and accuracy. Made of heavy-gauge aerospace aluminum alloy, it is built to last. Black-filled gradations stand out against a matte finish for easy reading. The Speed Square includes the Swanson Blue Book of rafter length and roof construction and also features markings for using the Swanson one-number method of rafter layout. The Swanson Speed Square is our most popular product and remains the most trusted square of its kind. Look for the Diamond cutout for genuine Swanson products.

From the Manufacturer

The Swanson Tool SO101 7-inch Speed Square is a popular pocket-sized square that incorporates features of the framing square, tri, miter, and protractor squares. Common rafter and hip/valley rafter scales permit one-number references for all cuts. The square is merely rotated to the proper roof pitch value on either scale to assure the correct angle cut. The slot along the scales will accommodate an adjustable locking pin for repetitive cuts using any 1/4-inch bolt and nut. Comes with a handy, 62-page pocket sized booklet that provides vital instructions, reference diagrams, and tables for the construction of roofs and stairs.

I am not a straight-line drawer so this tool has made a huge difference in my projects! I am converting a camper van and this has been a go-to for me for all the measuring and cutting I have to do. You can use this for so many things that I think everyone should have one.

Heavy duty, durable and precise framing square. My last Swanson square lasted me roughly 10 years (until someone nabbed it out of my toolbox), and I expect this one to meet or exceed that.

I'm always trying to increase my knowledge of building and carpentry and recently decided to incorporate a rafter (with bird'smouth) design into my window awning project. The Swanson square was perfect for the job and with the book it came with I was able to learn the "One-Number" rule that makes it real simple to build your roof rafters. I'd advise all first timers to do it on a smaller project--such as dog house or small shed--before a home's roof. I'm not a natural numbers guy so only read the book in a few parts, watched a quick video on the Swanson square and then went to work.I went through three sets of 2x4 rafters templates until I got the angle just right for the rafter to sit up against the ledger against the wall and the birdsmouth to land on the lower 'sill plate' that would support the window awning. I think my "ONE" number for pitch was 9 (I was using degrees{36}) and from that number you can essentially build a real roof. It came out great and from this one project I''m pretty sure I can build a real roof for any structure I design at this point. If you know your 'one' number prior to building a new project but we didn't because of other concerns such as making the awning tall enough for my clients to walk under while slope had to be steep enough to provide sufficient shade to window. As a result, my assistant and I had to test angle cuts (and then hold them up against the framing structure) until we got the approximation of 36 degree-which makes all the rafters plumb cuts. Then using the square we got the pitch of 9. More importantly, you can use a simple formula to find the distance for your birdsmouth (where your 'seat' and 'heel' cuts meet the outer edge of your bulding/sill plate). Prior to this project I only used my squares for 90degree cuts. Now, it's opened up a whole world of building possibilities. Thanks for the book, Swanson.

My father and grandfather both had this speed square. Any wood projects they did back in the day, it was with them. So now that I own my own house it's finally my turn to buy one. If you plan on doing projects yourself, or you're a seasoned contractor, this is a must have. You can use a speed square to find roof pitches, guide your circular saw and more including marking any angle from 0 to 90 degrees. Very easy to use once you get an understanding of measurements and it even still comes with that small blue instruction book. The only difference now is they make it with the numbers easier to see than the old ones. Great classic tool.

I have been using the Speed Square for quite some time now and I must say, it is one of the most versatile and useful tools in my toolbelt. The speed square that I have is easy to read, easy to use, and has a scribe bar, which makes it even more convenient to work with. The Speed Square's build quality is excellent and has never let me down. I highly recommend this tool to anyone looking for a reliable and accurate measuring tool. Whether you're a professional contractor or a DIY enthusiast, the Speed Square is a must-have in your toolbox. It's a great investment that will save you time and money in the long run.

Simple but extremely efficient to use. Remember though that 5 inch in a feet is not 50 cm in a meter but after all if you read the manual it's very useful tool and to be honest for general carpentry work imperial system is more practical than the metric...
