I live in a townhouse and used a bird feeder stand to mount the thermometer so I could read it through my patio window. It was actually better than mounting it directly to the fence because I didn’t have to fold out the metal tabs, and I could rotate it so I could read it head on instead of at an angle. I used a piece of scrap wood to mount it to the stand. I look at it from inside about 10 ft away, and the 12 inch size is fine for that. The 18 inch one would be too big for my fence.The temperature reading has consistently been within 1 or 2 degrees of my weather app, so I didn’t need to calibrate it. Make sure to put it in the shade or else you might see wider temperature swings due to the sunlight (for any thermometer).It does feel a little “flimsyâ€, but who cares? I’m not trying to hammer a nail with it; I just want to look at it. And for cold MN winters, it helps to be made of metal, so I’m glad for that. 5 stars overall.

We put our temp gauge under a roof on a patio wall out of direct sun light. The gauge is big and the mechanism is a simple thermal wire. There were no instructions on how to adjust the gauge but of course Google answers all questions about almost anything. You just rotate who mechanism clockwise or counterclockwise. I think the one I had before I just figured out it was just off by six degrees and got use to it. Its light in weight and will hang on small screws or however you choose to hang it. There are dozens and dozens of different ones on Amazon , and I choose Taylor because they are a well known brand and it was a prime purchase. The price was also reasonable.

I thought I was buying one of the better classic outdoor temperature guages when I purchased this. The thermometer is not only very cheaply made, it's very inaccurate too. They probably built this for $0.50. Very disappointed.

This thermometer is lightweight, easy to hang and very easy to read from a distance. That was an important point for us. It has a real drawback, though. As many of the reviews state, it is not perfectly calibrated. At cooler temps, it is as much as 5 degrees off, on the high side. At warmer temps, more like 3 degrees. As long as you know what you are dealing with, it’s totally usable. But if you want 100% accuracy, try another product.
