Prefect for Arduino projects, LED Light Cubes, Scrolling Signs, Robotics, The Atmel AVR Microcontroller Projects, and more. The 74HC595 devices contain an 8 bit serial in, parallel out shift register that feeds an 8 bit D type storage register. The storage register has parallel 3 state outputs. Separate clocks are provided for both the shift and storage register. The shift register has a direct overriding clear (SRCLR) input, serial (SER) input, and serial outputs for cascading. When the output enable (OE) input is high, the outputs are in the high impedance state. Both the shift register clock (SRCLK) and storage register clock (RCLK) are positive edge triggered. If both clocks are connected together, the shift register always is one clock pulse ahead of the storage register.

These little fellows do a nice job of shifting my bits around.I'm using them for an Arduino project, where I make use of 3 of them to illuminate 20 (potentially up to 24) LEDs. When powering several LEDs or other components via a shift register, be sure to make note of the 50mA power limit of the shift register, and use the appropriate resistors for the LEDs to avoid zapping the shift register when all the lights illuminate simultaneously. You can do the calculations, but I recall that with 8 LEDs in use, it required resistors of at least 550 ohm or more per LED.

Well packaged, no bent pins. They all worked. Will buy again.

Necessary for a breadboard experiment, but don't need a 100 of them;-)

Learning Arduino so one project was shift registers. This chip is cost effective, does what it is supposed to, and provided me experience.
