Book are embalmed minds. That why I now see Dan as a walking encyclopedia when it comes to guitar repair. There’s a wealth of experience in these pages that only comes from years of dedication to the craft. The “Guitar Player Repair Guide” has three sections: Basic, DIY and Deep. Again, Dan is so knowledgeable that the “Basic” sections are pretty much everything the average player needs to know. You’ll need to roll-up your sleeves for the DIY sections and have considerable dedication for the Deep sections.Dan has his own way of doing things and gives great detail on how-to and often why he likes a particular way. But what I really like is he points out how other people do things too. There are interviews and so many names/publications mentioned that the book is also a great resource for further study.Basically, Dan is confidant because he has mastered the craft of guitar repair. He doesn’t feel threatened by different perspectives. That’s what makes the “Guitar Player Repair Guide” the best book I’ve seen on guitar repair: It is intentionally inclusive of different approaches. If you do guitar repair for a living, then the “Guitar Player Repair Guide” is a must have. If you’re looking to just care for your guitar and want something more basic, then I suggest “Complete Guitar Care” by Blackwood. Wouldn’t hurt to get both. So glad I did.

The book came sooner than expected, and I love that it’s by one of the masters of guitar repair. I am going to get a lot of mileage out of this.

I’ve bought this 4 or 5 times over the years for myself or as gifts. Great book to learn to DIY, or just educate yourself on your instrument. Every guitar player should have a copy.

The fact is many people play guitar and have no idea of how to maintain it other than changing the strings. As long as you have a good repair shop nearby that's usually all you need... or is it? If you're one of those people who have to know what it is you're holding, driving, playing and/or what can make it work that much better then this book is a must. It covers every square inch of both electric and accoustic guitars, giving you a thorough explanation of how to reach a fine standard of playability and beyond in a casual, easy to read style. What's more is it explains many of the problems repairmen and luthiers actively work to solve in a deceptively simple looking instrument. While it doesn't cover every after-market solution to every adjustment problem it does cover the essential tools and techniques necessary that should enable the reader to repair and/or tune any guitar.I was skeptical this book was worth the price until it arrived. Over 1 inch thick, excellent photos, clear layout and the included DVD is a treasure of information that would take you quite a while to accumulate for free off the net and even more time to organize. It's no wonder old copies sell for close to the price of a new one. After you've jumped into fine tuning you might go a step further by learning how your instrument was made. Check out Melvyn Hiscock's "Make your own electric guitar" to see common boards, steel, copper and magnets become that amazing thing we all aspire to play our best.Outstanding value.

When I got my first guitar in 1984 I also got a copy of the most recent Guitar Player magazine. Inside that magazine was a column by Dan Erlewine on guitar repair and maintenance. That column turned out to be the most valuable of all the ones in the magazine. Over the next year, reading Dan's column inspired me to want to learn more about the instrument, how to set it up, repair, maintain and even customize my cheap electric guitar. Over the years, I have built and repaired many guitars for local bands and musicians and the most valuable resources that I have in my library are the magazines with Dan's columns, books he has written and videos he has published. This book is the bible for anyone that wants to know the proper way to string a guitar, stretch strings, tweak and maintain the instrument. I bought this book again to give to my 18 year-old nephew who is interested in helping his friends maintain their instruments and to learn more about them. After just a couple of days of thumbing through it, he told me it was the best book he had ever seen on the guitar. This is the most comprehensive book you will find on this subject and I have bought and read almost all of them. Even if, like me, you own the first or second editions of this book YOU MUST have this edition as well. It has so much more information in it that you will refer back to it no matter how long you work on or play guitar.Dan works for Stewart-MacDonald Guitar Supply (stewmac.com) and publishes a newsletter called Trade Secrets, which is a wonderful appendix to this book. They also have most of the parts and tools that you need to work on guitars. If you only get one book to learn about taking care of your guitar - THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED!

Covers just about everything the youtubers forget to mention. Things like the affect of gravity on neck relief, shaping compound necks and compensating for high fret falloff. Really good book if you prefer to learn from a pro instead of some hack looking for views. Stop sifting videos looking for gems...read how it's done and *then* find a video of someone doing it. Much faster learning curve. And start buying pawn shop guitars to practice on.

Very informative book. Only issue for me is the images are black and white, some photos are not clear. I would make 5. Star if its colored pictures. But considering the price. Not bad.
