If you follow the technique correctly (meaning go slow the first couple times you use it so you don’t leave the head embedded) then it’s a very useful tool. It’s always a little harder on a black dog.

These L@@K very nice. But I have no idea, HOW to use them, b/c THERE are no instructions! This, is a “pet peeve†of mine.On the tool itself, it says†This side up".Ok then!! I can see there is a hole to hook on a collar & leash & on the pic that goes with it (I tried to attach & couldn't) it shows the green thing, squishing(?) a tick & the other one, like about to "sweep" the tick away?I have no idea, how it is supposed to work? Ticks once they burrow in, I've heard of people using a "hotmatch" to force them to back out, but, my dog has long hair, so I don't want to put a "hot" anything by her hair? They are handy to put on your backpack & camping supplies, that's a good thing. There are no instructions, it looks like you can just "Sweep the tick away" with this tool?LOL. Sure you can.I have “major issues†with people going thro all the trouble of making a “nice product†a HANDY & useful product & then, FAIL to put decent directions/instructions on HOW/WHY to use this itemThat's why I only give 4 stars.

Since I purchased them, we haven't had to use them, thank goodness! But we had one similar to this years ago and it worked great. I expect these to work just as easily.Purchased 3 - 1 for husband; 1 to fasten on my purse; 1 for house.

Removing ticks is never fun. Having some decent tools at least helps make the job a little easier.I have used the ones like the green plastic hockey stick shape. They work good as long as the V notch is small enough to grab an immature tick. Once they engorge, they are easier to grip. I am very familiar with using these on my dog and also people.I have never used the flat aluminum ones. They seem sturdy, but I am not sure about the flat desing. It seems it would be hard to get that flat enough against skin to get to the head of a tick On a furry dog, I just don't think it will work. I thought about bending one 90 degrees to see if it would make it more logical to use. The remover opening would still be a little larger than it needs to be.So look around and read some reviews. You might be better getting an assortment of sizes in the plastic hockey stick shaped ones.

The light-green crowbar-type tool works great to remove ticks from horses. The metal tools seem more awkward for me only because the surfaces where ticks like to bury themselves on a horse (chin grooves, in the mane, between the butt cheeks...) don't always allow for a flat tool. But in theory, they should work just as well, so YMMV depending on the animal / surface.Bottom line: I'm glad I ordered this set.

Where we live we have ticks. We have got our yard pretty free, but the dogs still find them when out and about and occasionally from the yard too. I haven't had a chance to use these yet, but am glad to have them. This set comes with 3 metal key chain type removers and one plastic crow bar type remover. I put one with my house hold first aid kit, one on my daughter's key chain, one in my emergency pack and one in my grooming kit. I have tried to make something like this, but with no luck. I feel reassured now that I have these for use when in need.
