Very quiet, excellent for practice. Tone isn’t great but that’s not really the purpose here. It blows freely enough that it’s not distracting to practice with. Very light, affects balance very little. Pairs well with my Jiggs Pbone.

This makes the instrument very quiet, perfect for practicing indoors. I think the instrument is still loud enough to be heard during the dead of the night while people in adjacent rooms are sleeping, but as long as you give yourself some space you can practice any time of the day with this mute. The foam interface is a quite dense and squishy foam, so it fits well in my trombone's bell and survives a fling test.

Please don't buy this mute because your conductor / band director told you to go out and buy a straight mute! This isn't what you're looking for! A straight mute is a type of performance mute used to generate particular high-frequency sound called for by some compositions.This is NOT a straight mute, or a performance mute at all. Again, please don't buy this as a performance mute! This is a practice mute and will effectively tamp all sound at all frequencies to a volume around mezzopiano no matter how hard you play. It is suitable for practicing in an environment where standard volume isn't practical. This practice mute is pretty good at its job and had a decent feel across two full octaves (F-F-F). The pedal tones in particular were satisfying. It seemed to have a minor effect on my pitch past 3rd position (tending sharp). The mute doesn't just bring your volume down, it obliterates dynamics completely, so it's only suitable for practicing your notes/runs rather than any character of the piece. It's not a replacement for practicing normally, but it is a tool to help you practice MORE when you otherwise wouldn't be able to.Recommended as a practice mute

I got this trombone mute for my son who plays in his school band. Before getting this, his trombone playing could be heard all throughout the house and even from outside. It fits perfectly and muffles the sound. He can still hear but it muffles the sound for the rest of us. He did say it restricts the air flow a bit so that’s something he said he’ll have to get use to.

Fits the horn well. Greatly reduces the volume, but also the quality of the tone. But the volume part is the key here, as now I can practice without angering my household. Creates some resistance that may lead to fatigue, but may also be improving my stamina as a result. No complaints!

The PAMPET TIPPER Trombone Mute Lightweight Trombone Straight Mute (Black) effectively 'does its job.' This straight mute mutes the sound significantly, allowing the trombonist to practice in settings where loud noises are prohibited. A prime example: as an apartment leaser, where instruments aren't allowed, this mute provides the opportunity to play without disturbing other tenants. When the mute is inserted into the bell, it does 'feel different' than being 'open,' so there is significant resistance. If you aren't accustomed to using a mute or haven't used one for a while, there may be an adjustment period. Overall, this lightweight mute is a welcome addition to a trombonist's collection, particularly if you live or are often in a setting where practicing openly isn't possible. Highly recommended.
