Spice grinder and cellar in 1: The lid is hermetically sealed so stored seasoning stays good longer. I prefer this type of cast iron spice grinder over manual chopping, electric chop-type grinder, or pestle/mortar. Very functional, manual tool allows fine control over grind quality (but impractical for large volume grinding). And the shape is very ergonomic. The brush is useless (so I use my wife's pastry brush to get all the spice out). FYI, it's cast iron so after seasoning, **DO NOT WASH**. Use brush to get spice out. If washing is needed, treat it like a cast iron pan.

High quality cast iron. Heavy. And best grinder I’ve ever owned!

I like this over a mortar and pestle for when i want a coarser, more even grind. It's hefty, the lid fits well, nice touch with the cleaning brush. I would recommend giving it a wash before first use, at least on the contact surfaces. It may not be an every day item for most people, but it's a good addition to any kitchen if you enjoy cooking.

Didn't do the job. I purchased this to grind flax seeds.....tried to use it once and it did a horrible job. It is now stored away....it is heavy, so it may be repurposed for a door stop.

I got this for 2 reasons...1 was because the other hand grinder I got was worthless and 2 because I only use cast iron cookware so it made sense to have a cast iron grinder. I've never been a grind it myself person but since I've became focused on eliminating any and all processed and prepackaged foods, it makes sense to grind my own herbs. Like all cast iron products, this thing has weight to it. I love how it has an airtight wood lid so u can store things for a bit if needed. The style allows you to be specific on how ground you want something rather than electric grinders that only spit out a finely ground powder. Its also easy to wash with just a sponge and doesn't have teeth that need a scrub brush to clean. Like with all cast iron, it's not something that you want to put in a dishwasher so be aware that it's hand wash only.

I didn't know there were spice grinders like this before I ordered it. It's so different from anything I've used in the past. The instructions say to add a tablespoon or two of price, place the two halves together and rotate back and forth. I made Christmas cookies that needed ground anise so that's the first spice I tried. It was easy to use but didn't get quite as fine as an electric grinder, but it did a very good job. It was so satisfying to manually grind the anise and the smell was amazing. Next I tried peppercorns. These were harder to grind evenly. After trying to grind by rotating the top and bottom pieces, I used the insert to smash the pepper, then twisted. That gave me a consistent coarse grind. It's not as fast as an electric grinder, but it does a very good job. Any unused ground spice and be stored in the top piece. A wooden lid is included to keep the spice fresh. It's a nice tool to leave on the countertop.

This cast iron grinder is a one of a kind to me. I like cast iron. I like grinding my own herbs. This was a no brainer. The looks are stylish. The value for the money is questionable. It's fairly easy to use once you get the hang of it. It's small and portable. It works everywhere. It is heavy and durable. Grinds good.
