This wiring is called “modern” because Fender began using it in the 1980s, as opposed to the 1950s. The original Strat had a master volume control, a tone control for the neck pickup, and a tone control for the middle pickup. There was no tone control for the bridge pickup, since it was assumed that a player would preset his two rhythm settings (neck and middle pickups), but the lead setting (bridge pickup) didn’t need to be adjustable, but would be wide open for maximum treble. Remember that during those early years, Fender never supported a 5-way switch. All Strats from 1954 until 1977 shipped with a 3-way switch.

In later years, Fender made some changes to the wiring to meet player demands. These included attaching the bridge pickup to the bottom tone control, a no-brainer for many players who felt that if any pickup should allow for some treble roll-off, it was the bridge pickup. The capacitor value on the tone control was changed to .022µF, which means that the tone controls provided less extreme tonal shifts than when a heavier cap was used (the earliest Strats came with a .1µF cap, which produced a very substantial tonal shift as the tone controls were adjusted; this value was changed to .047µF in the early 1960s).

Great improvement to an old Fender Squire Strat. The kit includes plenty of wire, CTS pots, quality 5 way switch, caps and a tone bleed circuit. Good instructions. Just needed to get different knobs because of the spline count on the pots.

I have a Frankencaster with super cheap wiring. I used this kit and now I may even keep the pickupsWiring diagram was super easy. Way more wire than you need to rewire a Strat. Really love the treble bleed, I'm going to order that for my other Strat.Parts are all top quality, pots spin nicely, switch feels solid (NEEDS A TIP). I would totally buy this kit again for a quick upgrade to a cheap guitar.

Great price, great quality and great customer service! It arrived way sooner than expected! I've had it installed in my stratocaster and I love the sound this circuit produces along with the guitar single coil pickups. If you are hesitant, just do it, you won't regret it.

I used this kit to gut and upgrade a Squier Standard Stratocaster with some new pickups. Everything in the kit was top quality and the diagram was more than sufficient for standard wiring. The inclusion of both regular insulated wire and push-back cloth insulated wire had me trying the cloth insulation for the first time ever. It was awesome. Very easy to deal with and I didn't have to worry about melting/overheating the plastic insulation. There was no diagram for the treble bleed. They should include this on the diagram as an optional bit. I didn't want to use it, but I googled and was able to find out how to hook it up just in case pretty easily.Installation notes:1. The squier standard has a full 1 3/4" body thickness so the 5-way switch depth wasn't an issue.2. I also purchased a separate kit to replace the plastic bits like the 5-way switch knob and tone/volume knobs because I figured the old bits wouldn't fit the new beefier hardware.3. Potentiometer shafts are bigger than the old ones. I just used a 3/8" drill bit to enlarge the existing holes in my pickguard and they fit perfectly.4. The 5-way switch has non-countersunk screws (This is probably standard for the better switches). If there are countersunk screws in your existing switch/pickguard - just use those. They should fit without issue.

After reading through most of the reviews on the ToneShaper Guitar Wiring Kit, For Fender Stratocaster, and SSS2 (Modern Wiring) I was excited to install this kit along with new SSS pick-ups in my Strat. The kit had all the correct parts and appeared to be in perfect order. I tested the 250k CTS pots and found the values to be 246k, 247k and 239k values which was excellent in my opinion. I decided to install the 239k as volume and the other two as tone pots.Reading that a few people had received defective 5 way switches did catch my eye, however there were only a few to mention this in the reviews, so I didn't bother to test the 5 way switch because after all the switch does is select the coils and would have a 0.0 ohm resistance value. I did click through the five positions and it felt very smooth and moved to all positions as I would have expected. After carefully installing the components and prior to installing in the Strat I decided to tap test the coils and do a rough function test, making sure the Volume and Tone pots all played nice and responded to changes in positions will tapping on the neck, middle and bridge pick-ups.Starting all the way forward in the #5 Neck position and all is well. Moving to the #4 position Neck and Middle nothing. Moving to the #3 position Middle coil and its dead too, no output. #2 position Middle & Bridge works. And the #1 Bridge position works but is outputting the Middle and Bridge as it had in the #2 position. Houston, we have a problem!First thing I do is quickly check the schematic and insure I had properly wired this kit. I had! Next pull out the Fluke DMM and start to ring out the connections. It confirmed exactly what my ears had told me during the tap test.Moving the selector out of the detents and slowly moving towards the next position produced a working circuit. I study the construction of the switch for about five minutes and realized the wiper tab of each contact pivots on a very tiny rivet between the wipers, and solder tab.Taking a tiny thin pair of needle nose pliers I was able to realign all the contacts to works as they were intended, and now this switch works as designed. This doesn’t seem to be a major issue as most people will have switches that are perfect, however if you get one like I had, about 10 minutes and a tiny pair of needle nose will get you back in shape.I took off one star for the 5 way switch, which is not a big issue for me and when properly aligned will work great. Every once in a while Quality Control might miss one.

I used this kit to upgrade/refurbish an old made in Korea Squire Strat. The kit was easy to install with some minor drilling to enlarge the holes on the pick guard for the pots. Even for a novice like me the soldering was easy and the provided wiring diagram was easy to follow. The vintage style cloth covered wires, full size 250k pots, CRL switch, and Switch Craft jack are a huge upgrade from the cheap crap that was in there. Along with a Graphtech Tusq XL nut and a pickup magnet swap (I pulled out the ceramic bar magnets and steel pole pieces and replaced them with alnico 5 pole pieces), this cheap old guitar sounds amazing now, and I haven’t even done a set up yet.*Just a side note, to most this is a no brainer but for the sake of those who are not too familiar with different pickup types: If you are used to playing with humbuckers and have your amp set up accordingly, your Strat is likely to sound off after this upgrade. Took me some time to figure out that it wasn't the gear at all that was the problem, it was my amp settings

This kit made all the difference on my Samick Artist Series Stat. Sounds like an entirely different guitar. The original pots were scratchy sounding.
