Product Description

TPS DODGE CUMMINS

Do you have a "dead pedal"?

The most common problem when a APPS sensor is failing is a "Dead Pedal." You will be driving down the road and hit the accelerator and NOTHING will happen. Your truck will not go. The most common codes associated with this problem are the P2121, P0121, P0122, P0123 codes. Another issue is a surging or a bucking and this oftentimes will not throw any codes.

This is an aftermarket throttle position sensor for '98.5-'07 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel trucks and is not a factory-style replacement. This TPS is not application specific and works on trucks equipped with either a manual or automatic transmission. Please check vehicle fitment tab above to see if TPS fits your vehicle.

Detailed instructions are included that explain how to install and calibrate the throttle position sensor.

1

STEP 1 - REMOVAL

1. Remove the black APPS (accelerator pedal position sensor) assembly cover.

2. Remove the six mounting bolts and partially pull the assembly away from the engine. Be sure not to place excessive strain on cables or electrical connector.

3. Disconnect the electrical connector form the APPS assembly.

4. Remove the two torx screws and remove the sensor.

2

STEP 2 - INSTALLATION

1. Install the new sensor. Tighten the torx screws just tight enough to hold the sensor in place.

2. Connect the electrical connector to the new sensor.

3. Turn the key to the run position, do not start the engine. Monitor the APPS voltage with the scan tool. APPS voltage can also be monitored by back probing pin # 3 on the APPS electrical connector.

4. Rotate the sensor until APPS voltage reads 0.55V +/- 0.05V. The set screws should not be adjusted. Tighten the torx screws to a final torque of 50 in. lbs. Verify that the reading is still within the specified range after the torx screws have been tightened. Turn the key to the off position.

5. Reposition the assembly to the engine with the six mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 105 in. lbs.

6. Reinstall the black APPS assembly cover.

3

STEP 3 - CALIBRATION

1. Turn the key to the run position, do not start the engine. Press the pedal slowly to the full throttle position and release slowly back to the idle position one time.

2. Clear any DTC's that may have set during the installation procedure.

I am very happy that this solved my problem, and I waited about 1/2 year to review it. This part is way too expensive from Dodge, and this was $50, rather than a couple $100. There were cheaper units being sold, but I don't always trust the lowest cost, >> Read the reviews and be wary of why a person likes or does not like it. (e.g. is it the manufacturer or their people liking it? If it is not liked, why? Having slow shipping is not a reason to dislike the product.)I put three stars on the installation, the installation instructions were not bad, it is just that they could have been much better and explicit. I did have to guess on steps, but it definitely got the job done. My vehicle: 2001 manual 2500. with ~360k miles. Great truck, ordered it new.

Calibrated with an ohm meter exactly like it says and have to paddle the gas pedal really fast about half the time when I start the truck to get it to work. It’s like the ECU doesn’t see it if I don’t do that. Press the pedal and nothing happens, turn it off and tap it really fast a couple times as soon as it starts and it starts working.

Part was easy to access and install; However it could have been my mistake in reading the directions or they were for a slightly different model, but they mention to probe pin 3 to calibrate and set the APPS voltage. In my case I had to probe pin 6, or the green wire in order to set the correct voltage. Other than this one discrepancy, this part fixed my P0122, and P0123 codes.

This sensor was installed correctly and lasted maybe 2 months. We don't use the truck we installed it in often. We maybe drove it 10 times with the sensor in before it went bad again. We ended up buying a new one from the parts house for 3 times the money but its still working great.

Installing was easy enough. ( I’m a heavy duty mechanic so easy for me) You need a multimeter to set this so the start voltage at idle position is at 5.55 volts. These are just potentiometers internally so each one is built slightly different so adjusting the voltage is a must do. This is no different then a factory one, if this is outside of your scope then I’d buy the assembly one which is likely preset up and locked in place.I suggest disconnecting the batteries and leave the key in the on position for 30 minutes to drain the capacitors, if you are having final setup issues? I personally do this anyway. Then reconnect batteries and setup the sweep by turning it to on position ( not running) and slowly press pedal down to the floor and back up. This is when the computer is logging the information on the total range as in voltage sweep of the potentiometer. Once that is done it should operate normally as long as you don’t have other issues in your system like bad wiring connections and so on. At this point mines been in for a week and no issues in 42 degree weather so far.As a mechanic it is not uncommon to come across bad electrical components that are no good on instal it happens. The key is make sure you don’t have a issue that killing the new components on instal which happens. That and if the supplier stands behind the product and replaces or makes it right.
