I have tried both. If I had to make a recommendation, it would be this: use plastic. But not because of flow issues. In my testing I could not discern a difference in flow.I connected the water softener fleck SS bypass valve to 3/4" copper pipes via stainless steel hex nipples and SharkBite 3/4 inch x 1 inch FIP 24 inch connecting hose. I selected stainless steel nipples instead of lead free brass because lead free brass still contains up to 0.25% lead. * SharkBite U3086FLEX24LF: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FN6QVQI * Type 316 stainless steel 1” nipple: S8346HN010 * T plus 2 pipe thread compound: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YPAFYAlternatively, for a Type 304 stainless steel nipple, see here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071DNZYKQBefore installing the bypass valve to the control head (5600SXT in my case), I used 3 wraps of Teflon tape and then a coating of T plus 2 pipe thread compound on the side of the hex nipples connecting to the stainless steel bypass, then tightened the nipples to the bypass. Mating the nipple to the bypass valve before connecting the bypass valve to the water softener’s control head reduces risk of applying to much leverage to the water softener. On the other side of the nipples—the side that connects to the Sharkbite hose, I did not use any Teflon or PTFE tape per instructions on the hose. This is clearly thanks to the rubber washers in the hoses, which makes additional protection unnecessary. If you're concerned about reduced water flow with the stainless steel bypass--and my experience says you should not be--get the plastic bypass and the 1" Noryl yoke part # 18606 instead. These plastic parts have less of a choke point compared to the stainless-steel bypass. It is easier to get a leak free connection to the bypass by using the plastic parts, and you will put less torque on the control head. The plastic route is also less expensive, eliminates need for 1” nipples, and requires fewer consumables such as the PTFE taps and pipe thread compound. * Plastic bypass: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078HMZMQF * Noryl 1” yoke part # 18606: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L44F85II tried the plastic parts listed above instead of this bypass before opting for the stainless steel--due to an ordering mix-up. I ended up switching to the stainless steel and did not notice any reduction in water pressure or flow. I stayed with the stainless-steel setup because it works and I had other projects to complete.
