I have prior experience with Viltrox 23/1.4 and 33/1.4. Both are good lenses, well built with some vintage character. The 56/1.7 is a completely different lens. It’s made of quality plastic, has no aperture ring and it is extremely small and lightweight. The AF is quick and accurate. Not as good as Sony lenses, but similar to Sigma 56/1.4.Sharpness is fantastic all over the frame wide open! The rendering is more modern than the other Viltrox lenses I mentioned at the beginning.Color is a bit cool. Bokeh is nice but not spectacular.Overall this is a very capable lens, very light and small. The value for money is amazing. Recommend!

Autofocus hunts a bit more than a Sont lens on my a6400, but the build quality and image quality cannot be beat for the money. The weight is nice and light which I prefer, easy on the wrists. Wide open it's a little soft but I find it a pleasing softness. Plenty sharp from f/2.8 to f/11. Nice contrast too. Easily in the class of lenses you typically see in the $400-600 range.

For reference I have used the sigma 56 which unfortunately broke and decided to try the Ttartisan 56 as a cheaper alternative after hearing how good it was. I immediately returned it and was going to go take the hit to pay for the sigma again when I came across this. I’m blown away with how good this lens is. It’s razor sharp as a portrait lens ! It does have a little vignetting wide open but that can be adjusted easily in post . I would say for someone shooting portraits and plans to blurr the subject from the background this is 99 percent of what I got out of my sigma at 1/2 the cost. I am very impressed with viltrox lately .

I don't often get dedicated APS-C lenses for my Sony camera, because I tend to favor the full frame options, so that I can use it with my full frame cameras as well. That being said, I'm very happy to try this 56mm f1.7 APS-C lens from Viltrox with my Sony a 6700. I'll get straight to the point. Wide open, the lens performs quite well, but can feature a bit of softness, which is to be expected. The contrast of the lens wide open is good, and even very good in the corners as well. There is a touch of vignetting wide open, but to achieve perfect optics, with excellent sharpness edge to edge, brightness edge to edge, I found stepping down to f2.8 is the real sweet spot. The focus motor is barely audible, making this a great lens for video as well. It's essentially an 84mm full frame equivalent, so it is an excellent portrait lens option for someone on a budget. The build quality is quite good, and I always appreciate that Viltrox provides a metal mount. You have a usb-c connection for firmware updates, and an included lens hood as well. The filter threads are 52mm, which is excellent for me, because I have lots of filters for that particular size. There's no manual focus switch on the lens itself, as you'll have to choose that option in camera, if that's what you want. I did find the autofocus very snappy, and accurate. It worked well with my a6700, and the continuous auto focus was particularly excellent. The manual focusing was good as well, though you will need to expect some focus breathing. It is a non stabilized lens, so you'll need to rely on electronic stabilization in camera. Of course, some of these things are to be expected given its price point, but I am very pleased with the optical performance in general. The bokeh performance on this lens is excellent as well, with beautifully smooth transitions, and pleasant softness. There is a bit of a haloing effect against bright lights, so the coatings are not what I would consider the highest quality. As far as chromatic aberration is concerned, I wasn't really able to detect any, but if you leave the lens wide open, you are likelier to find just the slightest touch of it. When it's stepped down it's almost nonexistent. In any case, whatever chromatic aberration may exist from leaving the lens wide open, is extremely easily corrected in post. All in all, I'm trying to consider the price point here, and the offering from Viltrox as far as the value is concerned. I think for the price, you're getting an excellent portrait lens option that offers a lot of great features for video, and photography. If you're looking for a portrait lens that is in the 85mm equivalent range, I think this is a great option for budget minded people. It's not a perfect lens by any means, but it does perform very well overall. There are certain things that I could nitpick, but when I consider the price, I think it deserves 5 stars. I'd recommend it as a great budget option.

Very nice lens for the price!Image quality reminds me a lot of the 56MM Fuji that I used to own.Pairs nicely with my APSC Sony, and looks fantastic!Autofocus has been consistent and smooth and images are pretty sharp. Bokeh is pleasing as well.Great lens for portraits and night shots with the big aperture.Really impressive lens at this price point, and I've been using it as my main lens lately.

I think this is an excellent lens for the price. 56mm on a crop sensor makes it equivalent to 84mm on a full frame, which would make it a decent length for portraits. On my Sony a6400 this lens focuses quickly and smoothly. The maximum aperture is f/1.7, which is good for shooting in low light and shots where you want a shallow depth of field, but at this aperture the images are sharpest in the centre and quite soft at the edges. You need to stop down for sharpness. The barrel rotates smoothly for manual focus, though god knows manual focus on a Sony APSC is a real chore. This lens comes with front and rear caps, a decent plastic hood, and a cloth drawstring bag for storage. It has a USB-C port on the back, in order to update the firmware, but I haven't tried that yet. I've heard it can be done wirelessly via the camera menus/bluetooth, but I haven't looked into that either yet.All in all I'd consider it a great budget lens, almost on a par with Nikon's 35mm DX f/1.8. I look forward to being able to try Viltrox's other lenses in the future.
