The abacus predates modern electronic calculators by centuries. If you are skilled enough with one, they can be useful in most situations in which computation of numbers is a necessity. Learning to use one is not necessarily difficult, though you may be spending the rest of your life learning to truly master it. To that end, there a many books that have been written on its use and it would be worth it to buy the book as well, as the instructions are rather limited. If you have an appreciation of history, elegance, and a willingness to learn, this is well worth the time and money. However, if you are of the "steampunk" persuasion, this may also serve nicely as a center piece on the curio shelf, as it is very well made and very pleasing to look upon. Either way, this is a beautiful piece that fits well within any home.

The instructions are clear. The quality is great. I'm getting betterat using it, but half the time I find myself using it as a fidget toy.

The Abacus and box was very nice. The problem is it was smaller in size than the measurements in the description. I guess they don't known how to use a ruler.

As is to be expected, it's a factory made product cheaply painted to look antique. Looks beautiful from about 15 feet away. It's functional but is made of poor materials, not for regular use. I'm a teacher. It's a great visual aid for teaching history of calculation but I wouldn't have students use it, in fear they would break it.

The case and the abacus are far more than I expected. Very well made and both have a delightfully antique look and feel about them, yet you know they are newly made items. The case's padded leather outside and the Chinese motif inside are very well done. It looks like an amazing duplicate of a very precious museum piece. Even the manual is delightful. (not sure but it may be parchment). It took me a few seconds to figure out the clasp but even that added to the uniqueness. I have been using the abacus all week and no problem. It is simply a Great Buy.

The abacus came in a case that was beautiful!!When I first got it some of the beads were stuck, but they worked free aftera little while. The book that comes with it is not the best instructional bookI've seen. I highly recommend "How to Use a Chinese Abacus" by Paul Green.
