This is a good aerator if you can find something heavy enough to put inside, and wait for a post-rain lawn. I ran this over the yard 24 hours after a rain shower and it penetrated the dirt with ease. However, if you have a dry lawn, I could see this doing more damage to the grass instead of penetrating the thatch.Setup is not as complicated or annoying as people are complaining about. It took my about 20 minutes. I would recommend a socket wrench to help tighten the spikes.

Easy to assemble, comes with 3/4 of the spikes already attached. You should get a deep-well 10mm socket and use a small impact drill, you'll have all the spikes on in 10 minutes or less. The rest of the assembly is a piece of cake. Works well, provided exactly the aeration i expected from a spike aerator. I filled with round stones and works just as I expected. I have fine fescue grass and probably works best in finer grass yards. The size of this aerator is perfect for my yard, which is roughly 5000 square feet.

it's ok when ground is soft or wet... ineffective when the ground is hard. no penetration even after making it heavier.

It arrives with only half of the spikes assembled. Assembly of the remaining spikes was a pain with the tools provided.I filled it with gravel instead of sand.It works well. Use a day after it rained so the spikes can penetrate the soil deeper. You might need a nap after finishing .

This tool is ok overall and on its own I'd give it 4 stars, but the sad part of ordering from this provider is they leave 15 spikes off and you have to install them yourself.Maybe it's just me but I think if they are going to install all of the other spikes they should finish the job and install the last 15.Seriously, when did doing MOST of the job become a good thing? Now for your understanding, I only have 1 hand and installing the remaining 15 spikes was quite the challenge.I'll not buy from this co. again.

I really wanted this to work. I spent 2 hours trying to put the thing together. Finally gave up… seams the parts were defective and did not fit like shown.

Filling the aerator with sand or gravel is a must. We have fairly heavy clay soil here and without the extra weight it wouldn't spike the ground.Assembly is easy but a little time consuming. I was able to aerate my whole lawn quickly and the holes worked well for catching grass seed when I was overseeding. If you don't mind a little manual labor it works great and is a good value.

I was looking for a quick aerator for my clay lawn for use in between renting a gas powered aeration machine. This appeared to fit the bill. However, it requires assembly. There were only a few of the spikes installed. It takes some patience and about 30 minutes but not too difficult a task. The barrel, once assembled, is not very heavy, and spikes did into penetrate the lawn. I have to use this after a heavy rain, or else heavily water the yard. This can make a mess - especially when the spikes are covered with clay mud.Barrel needs to be heavier to work on compacted lawns or heavy clay soils. Some others have mentioned filling the barrel with sand or gravel. I may try this to see if I have better luck.
