I like to use mortise and tenon joints on my pieces and wanted a better way of finding center. This little tool does the trick well. Normal pencils fit in the hole, then into the small hole at the bottom.Big thing - put the wood you are measuring in a vice or clamp. You need 2 hands to operating this tool. One hand twists it so it's centered, the other hand holds and pushes down on the pencil. For this to work, the wood needs to be secured (i use a wood vise).So yeah, great measuring tool, if you need an offset, just add another piece of wood in. For what it's worth, the magnet isn't strong enough to hold it, but it's in my tool chest anyway so it doesn't worry me at all.

Yes, there are a lot of techniques for marking offsets and reveals, but this is super easy to use and the magnets are convenient for attaching it to the saw or other location to keep it from getting misplaced; the board divider feature works well, but marking the offsets was the main reason for my purchase.

Very handy inexpensive tool for finding the center of a board edge. And marking reveals on framing molding etc.

This center finder works as expected, but it has a smaller width than other center finders. I can't use it for barrel staves because it's too small. I ended up buying a larger tool. I should have paid better attention to the width of this before buying. Also, it was difficult to keep the center pencil from wobbling.

Wonderful little tool for drawing accurate center lines in any board up to 2 1/2†wide. It is very-very simple to use.. just make sure you use a standard, well-sharpened #2 pencil. It will also allow you to mark off-center lines and it is designed to hold your pencil while being magnetized to your toolbox. AND, it’s inexpensive. It is so convenient to grab at a moments notice it may make you wonder why you waited so long to get one! I love it. I don’t know how anyone can say it’s inaccurate... nor do I understand why anyone would struggle with it. It is literally as simple and accurate as a tool can be, and a great value to boot. What’s not to like?

Pencil will move from true center if you push tool down flat to surface. Push pencil all the way through and hold tool above surface to maintain true center measurement.
