I had some window balances to replace, and this tool came in very handy for tensioning the balance. There is a notch in the balance that this tool sits right in - wind clockwise several times, then easily place it in the balance. Definitely recommended.

I replaced the spiral balance springs on 14 single hung windows. The forks on the tool did bend apart (separating) after a few windows, but I squeezed them together again with pliers and they worked fine again afterwards. By the end, the shaft of the tool was bent in a gentle "U" shape from pulling the spiral springs downwards so many times, but it is not broken and did the job. I would suggest making the tool out of a more rigid metal. Otherwise I recommend it, especially for the homeowner who uses the tool for the windows on their own house and doesn't need it to stand up to years of weekly use.

Does what it's supposed to, but isn't perfect. I found when turning the handle and pulling downwards (the only way to properly tension the spring), the tool had a tendency to slip and immediately detension the spring. I believe this is due to the fact the hooks are too shallow and don't fully wrap around the spring ends. I'd highly recommend wearing gloves because when that spring rapidly detensions, it will certainly leave a mark. My solution to this was to ever so slightly bend the 2 hooks that grab the spring inboard with pliers, this drastically improved the grip on the spring and wouldn't suddenly slip when applying tension. This tool does what it was designed to do, but if you're going to be using this a lot, maybe go for a higher quality tool.

My husband put these in when our window didn't want to stay up anymore. Works really good, no problem putting them in.. Now I can open the window again...

The metal that the hook portion of the tool is made of is not strong enough to withstand the torque force of the spiral spring. The hooks bend out of shape and no longer grip the pegs at the end of the spring. Which renders the tool useless. The tool is worthless.

If you think you can get a spiral balance installed without this, or a tool like it, you're gravely mistaken. The ten plus dollars you spend on this tool will save you a thousand dollars' worth of aggravation. Keep the tool as straight up-and-down with the balance as you can to prevent it from slipping out of the balance feet while tensioning the rod. This straight up-and-down position also keeps the new balance from breaking internally. Most of you aren't making a living with this tool, you're just fixing your house windows. If I could give it ten stars, I would.
