My sis is a young 79 years old. I ran into these castanets by accident online and I just had to get them for her. She used to dance and play them as a young girl Didn't know they still made them. Great Christmas gift (2024).

Castanets are usually played with a set for the right hand (lower pitch) and a set for the left hand (higher pitch). This is just a single set, so there is nothing for the other hand. The string can be adjusted so that the loops fit snuggly over your thumb. It is easy to untie the knot that is on it when it is delivered and retie it so so it can be adjusted correctly. The sound is okay, but, as I mentioned, there is only one pair for one hand, which makes it impossible to play in a traditional way. From the product page photos, it appears that this is probably meant to be a toy for children and not an actual musical instrument.

These are exactly as pictured, wood with a nice finish, but they come with no instructions for how to use. You would think just a ring on each clapper to put your fingers through would do the trick, but no, these come with a string looping through both halves. I looked at others for sale, and they all seem to have the string. Has no one thought of the ring idea for these??I have already consulted the internet on how to use these with a string, but honestly, I get confused with the instructions and still have not had any clicky clacky luck with these clackers. Once I figure the special knots I need to get the things fastened to my fingers so I can clack them, I will stop back by here with a demo video. Otherwise when used improperly with two hands, I can get sound out of them.I guess this instrument may be too advanced for me.
