Awesome keyboard, especially for this price. Seems like countless instruments and voices that have been professionally sampled resulting in authentic reproduction. Touch sensitive keys are a plus. I added a sustain pedal. Fun to play.

I am just a beginner but this keyboard is amazing it has great sound and so many features along with Touch Sensitive keys. And of course Yamaha quality. I did purchase a sustain pedal which really adds to the sound.

I learned to play a "Chord Organ" many years ago, and later worked on learning a bit about reading music, but never really got to the point where I could easily read standard sheet music. I did learn to play most of the basic chords with my left hand on a standard piano/organ keyboard while playing the melody with one or two fingers of my right hand, but have not really had anything to work with or practice on since I sold a "Thomas" organ back in 1976 so had forgotten most of what I really knew. This Christmas, my wife, knowing that at 82, I really wanted to re-learn a bit of music, especially to be able to play Christmas music in our home this year so she bought me the Yamaha PSR-E283 keyboard as an early Christmas gift. Since receiving it, much of what I knew in the distant past has come back and I have been able to play many of the songs I learned on the old "chord organ". This keyboard has a lot of nice features but IS designed for beginners. It does, however have a super nice sound and enough features like different instruments, rhythms, etc., that it could easily serve as an inexpensive backup keyboard for many musicians as well. All in all, I really like it and for the money, it's hard to beat for someone wanting an inexpensive but yet nice sounding keyboard with full sized keys (61 of them) that plays well.

Sounds great for this price point, actually really great I was surprised. Many voices to chose from, the piano voices are the best. There are also lots of special effects built in which are very good, it may take a beginner a while to get the hang of setting them, but fun to play round with. Make sure to go online to Yamaha's site to download the data sheet, owners manual and reference manuals, you'll need them all to learn how to use this and understand all the features and how to make them work. But the manuals are pretty easy to understand and makes it easy to learn to use this keyboard and all it's functions.

My wife has expressed an interest in learning how to play the piano/keyboard. For Christmas, I thought i'd surprise her with a nice Yamaha keyboard. After reading reviews on Amazon and other musical instrument stores, I decided on this particular keyboard. For a beginner, it has worked out great. My wife is taking steps to get instructions on playing the piano and of course, learning all of the nuances/features that this keyboard has to offer. She's "in love" with her new Yamaha keyboard. I follow the old adage "Happy wife, happy life!"PROS: Yamaha quality, a LOT of built in features, easy to set up, easy to useCONS: None noted at this time

It came fast, and I was excited to play with it. But I noticed the volume on the speakers would increase and decreases spontaneously as I was playing, I also needed to crank the volume to max to be able to actually hear it. Anything lower, and it was barely audible. The sounds are great considering it's a yamaha, but i can't add other sounds, no firmware update (probably because it's newer), and after playing my roland rd-88, this keys on the yamaha are damn slippery! I needed weighted keys. But I love how light it is. I'll keep playing with it throughout the week to see how it feels, but the low volume, and keys are a bit of a turn off for me. I just wanted something light to put in my bedroom and be able to move around easily. I also found I should have purchased the 61key instead. I don't like to return things, but the slippery action has me straining my arms to stay on the keyboard. We'll see....

It has a solid, quality build and, for a beginner, a real feel for the keys and the sound. By the way, the fact that the instruments synthesize percussion and many instruments means that, as a beginner, I didn't get bored listening to my mistakes over and over until I mastered the lessons. So, I recommend it for new learners. Lightweight is an asset, but the limited number of keys makes it appear less of a real instrument and more of a toy piano. I opted for the 70+ key version for that reason.

Excellent quality and sound. I am enjoying learning on it. Some cool sounds to enjoy. Very realistic instrument sound on many of them.
