Based on the famous Rottenburgh body design, this recorder has an arched windway to produce a slight resistance that gives you better breath control and allows you to play with more expression.

These recorders have a professional sound and are as durable as they come. Can't go wrong with Yamaha.

I had the alto in rosewood finish. I ordered this one, too. I don't know how, but this one sounds better than the rosewood finish. It is the same model. It is just a different finish, so I don't believe the finish makes a difference. The one with the rosewood finish is a few years older so maybe they have made improvements. This one has a clean, pure sound to it. I liked it so much I ordered a soprano which I usually avoid due to the high pitch. It has a nice, clean sound, too. I would definitely recommend this recorder.

Decent sound. Smaller than my other wooden recorder, but as a beginner, this is better for my smaller hands.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered my Yamaha YRS-314B soprano recorder. My prior experience with "plastic" recorders and flutes had not been a positive one. I'll also admit to a bit of snobbery as well. Having played handmade recorders from different types of wood (pear, walnut, oak) I was coming from the school of "it can't be any good unless it's a piece of art". Boy was I wrong and happily so. My Yamaha has a great sound and tone. It's easier to maintain and clean than my "artwork" versions and is consistent during play. Don't let the price and "plastic" frighten you. This is a great instrument to learn to play. I've played it at church in a recorders group and it sounds as good as, or better than, its wooden counterparts. Very reasonably priced and it came with a cleaning kit. All around great.

a delight to play. precise in your hand, it -looks- for your notes... some altissimo notes come out almost on their own---- it feels great and lightweight in your fingers. This, compared to my wood soprano hohner (which I like... ok).. But, it is like the difference between driving a BMW and an AUDI quattro. BMW has good body and force (maybe even a better "resonance"). But when you need to actually drive?........ no contest

I own 8 recorders, 6 of them sopranos. Comparing this one to others in the price range...Cons: The 2 Yamaha recorders I own both exhibit a lot of breath "noise" that is not consistent from one note to the next. (The other Yamaha I own is a less expensive model with a straight windway.)Pros: The finish is very pleasing, even better than pictured. The case is nicely done from cloth with a zipper and the rod and cream are useful. I like the way it fingers and it offers a reasonable breath resistance that is pleasant to play. Conclusion: In this price range I think the Aulos is superior in fit and sound quality. Check out the Aulos 503B and 703B before considering this one. Aulos makes a wood-tone one (703Bw) if that is important to you.

This is a nice instrument. The acoustics are exactly the same as the the YRS 302 and the YRS 312, which is to say, pretty darn close to fine wooden instruments. The difference is simply on of aesthetics: The 302 is dark brown (almost black), the 312 has a rosewood/ palisander woodgrain, and the 314 has an ebony woodgrain.Soundwise, it's nearly indistinguishable from a wood instrument. It's an easy blow. Reedy in the low register, light and bright in the high register. The only complaint I have is that you have to store it fully assembled in the case.

It's my first recorder. Easy to learn, no problem even with my small hands. Very high notes didn't sound so great at the beginning, but it improves over time, so I suppose it's a player problem rather than instrument problem :)

Quizás soy yo pero la siento muy parecida a la normal de escuela, difÃcil de controlar las notas agudas quizá con más práctica, eso sà está muy bonita

This recorder is made of plastic, but does not look cheap. The tone is bright, accurate and easy for high octave. Far easier to care than wooden one. My daughter has been playing this recorder for church service with many good comments. She used to play a basic wooden recorder, but likes this one far better.

This instrument is nicely in tune and super easy to maintain, since it's made of plastic. I'm not a big fan of the plastic sound though, but for this price range, it's a decent instrument to buy and good for long hours of practice since there's no wood that needs to dry out.
