From the Manufacturer

The Benefits of Plugging Your Grass. Plugging is one of the simplest and most economical ways to establish a new lawn, convert a troubled lawn, or repair a damaged lawn. Grass plugs have a complete root system and are easier to establish than sod. Moisture is probably the most important consideration immediately after planting. Adjust watering to climatic conditions. Without rainfall, grass plugs should be watered daily for the first 7 to 10 days. Soil and plug moisture must be maintained. Consult with your gardening expert about the desired amount of water. Root-in will occur in approximately 14-20 days during cool months and 7-14 days during warm months.Don't be afraid to mow a new lawn. After the turf begins to grow, mow at recommended heights. By mowing early and not letting excessive grass accumulate, the texture will be finer, many upright weeds will be killed, the turf will become more dense, and lateral spread will increase.

Just used this gadget to dig holes for 72 grass plugs and am pleased with its quality and performance. As long as the soil was moist and more or less soft rather than dry and hard, using this gadget was pretty easy. It's sturdier than I thought it would be and appears to be built to last. Also, the cutting edges are suitably sharp. Hitting a stone will dull the edge, however, resharpening is not a problem.Fine-tuning came with experience. So, sometimes the gadget took a little coaxing, like using both thumbs to eject a sticky soil plug or learning how to get one foot then the other foot on the crossbar to give it the needed push. Sometimes the gadget accumulated mud as it went along, I believe because I moistened the soil too much. It worked regardless, though the plugs weren't as neat. Washing the caked mud off at the end of the day was a chore, but doable and worthwhile. Tip: try dipping the end of the gadget in a bucket of water between plugs. This may improve operation in some soils.I don't think this product was meant to be used in dry, hard soil. And in fact, I found it could not be used that way, at least not by me.

Where I live in FL, you don’t have to worry about clay soil (had that up north...ugh!) as soil is loamy/sandy for the most part. You do have to deal with tree roots and other grass roots. I found this very good at easily punching thru the soil. I’m not sure why other models don’t have the sawtooth edge; I would think it would make cutting into the soil very difficult without this feature. These “teeth” readily cut into the soil and pulled the plug out. When I encountered difficulty getting the plug I pulled out to drop out (i.e., I could not get rod at top to force it out, because there was a grass root stuck in there), I lightly tap the rod with a mallet. Works like a charm. Makes putting in plugs a breeze. Wish I had done this a long time ago! Tool is sturdy and well made.

like a lot of folks have commented on-might have to use a rubber mallet to eject the plugs-but is a great tool for either transplanting Bermuda grass sod or using Zoysia Farms or Harmony Zoysia 3 inch grass plugs. the tool works great for both. The soil must be moist to work correctly, but it works great. i purchased the Yard Butler Sod Plugger, because it was 3 inches x 3 inches (per plug) instead of 2 and a quarter inch plugger by Pro Plugger-which i had tried to use with my three inch purchased plugs and it was just not as large a diameter hole as needed for the 3 inch plugs. If you purchase either 3 inch Zoysia or Bermuda grass plugs--all you have to do to get them to thrive (with this tool) is dig the three inch hole and press the plugs in the ground with your hands or your feet and they will be fine. i have used this tool to transplant current Bermuda sod to bare spots in the lawn and i have a very nice Bermuda lawn, in the sunny areas. And great looking Zoysia in the shaded ares, that were from purchased 3 inch plugs. you can't go wrong with this fine tool!

It does work, takes a bit of back and forth pushing to work, but gets a nice square chunk of turf out. Either a soft mallet tap of turn upside down and bang on grass to remove.
