Without the Zahn cup one is only guessing as to the viscosity of the paint. I have had to thin automotive base coats and sealers that were too thick to run thru my gun. Works like a champ and is designed well. You will need a stop watch to time how long it takes the paint to run through the Zahn cup. The Stainless steel makes it easy to clean. Eliminates all the guesswork if one's paint is too thick or too thin and allows consistency in your viscosity.
