I chose the Python lock because it came in a cable length suitable for securing both my bike and kayak to my car's roof rack. It took a minute to figure out how to attach the cable to the lock body as the included diagram is vague and shows a different lock. With the key hole facing you ,tilt the swivel end to the right so the hole on the bottom lines up with the slot on the top of the lock body. Then slide the cable through from the left (plastic coated end first) until the metal flange on the opposite end seats inside the swivel. Thread the cable to secure your gear, then pass it through the bottom of the lock body and out the top. The swivel feature makes it easier to maneuver the lock for this purpose. A cool feature is that even when locked, the cable can still be pulled to tighten but it won't move the opposite way.If you purchase 2 or more locks, you can (if desired) request that they be keyed identically. Many reviewers have commented about the odor of the cable. This is due to the type of plastic used for the protective coating but I found that it disappeared a few days after being out in the open air.I have used Master locks ever since being issued one for my locker in grade school. They have always been durable and trouble free. I expect this one to be no different.

I use this lock to secure the bikes on our hitch mount. It works well and has been very reliable.

I have a two-bike rack installed in a car hitch. There are two bikes on that rack worth a bunch of money. Whether the bikes are on or off the rack, there are removable parts on the rack itself. We frequently leave the car--rack attached--in a public parking area. When we stop to eat, we leave the car--bikes on the rack--in a public parking area. In either situation I run the twelve-foot cable through wheels, frames, the racks, the hitches security loops and the wheel braces. Leaving the car with this cable lock installed gives me a sense of positive security. When not in use, the cable and lock coil up into a 10" - 12" circle so storage is easy. I love this lock. It's solid, it looks heavy-duty and it works well and easily. I have reason to believe it has dissuaded a few "bad buys" from trying to offload some of our bike gear. On one occasion the folks in the next car over lost both bikes while they stopped for a cup of coffee; the crooks simply used a bolt cutter to break the chain (in a vinyl sheath) which they thought was "securing" their bikes. Four grand, gone in an instant. We all four cried together. Big, big bummer for them. Not so much for us.

I first saw one of these locks at my brothers home. He used it to lock his kayak to a tree in the back-yard. I borrowed it to briefly lock a trailer to my car, because I didn't have a locking hitch-pin. I ran the cable through the frame of the trailer and the wheel of my car. When I put bike-racks on the roof of my car I needed a way to lock the bikes up there. I've had a bike stolen off a rack before, so I learned the hard way. I knew this lock would be the perfect choice. I loop the cable through both bike frames and under the roof-rack rails, then cinch it tight and lock it up.There are so many uses for this type of lock, and the best part is that if you ever need a different length cable, that's the only part you need to buy. Of course, with the cinching ability, a "too long" cable can still do the job of a shorter one, just with a "tail" left over.

It would be nice if the re-keying question that is on here was answered by the business selling them. The only option I saw was to get several of these locks all keyed the same if you chose delayed shipping. I bought it based on it being a master lock, and would like to know if/how to get it keyed to match my other master locks so I don't have so many keys.

Cable is plenty long enough to go through two bikes, the wheels, and through the trailer hitch safety chain holes to secure both the bikes and the carrier to the car.As far as security, this is in the same ballpark as a padlock. Cables cannot be hardened too much otherwise they wouldn't bend or the metal will become brittle and crack. Somebody with cutting tools will be able to defeat this. The bigger vulnerability seems to be the small lock cylinder. Small lock cylinders like this one are usually very easy to pick. With 15 minutes practice most people can pick a padlock faster than it would take to cut the cable.I don't think that I would use this to lock up bikes overnight in the inner city, but for a rest area, campground, restaurant parking lot, this is perfect.

Perfect to tie down my kayak so it doesn't walk off! When I kayak with a group we often go out to dinner afterward. It would take a thief less than 5 minutes to cut the straps and throw my kayak in the back of a truck while I am eating. While a person with heavy duty wire cutters looking to steal a bike or kayak would be able to cut this cord, it is plenty thick and eliminates the potential opportunistic thief who may just happen to be passing by. I loop the cord through the metal grommet on the front of my kayak and then through the roof rack which is also locked to my car. I am very happy with this purchase!!

The cable is well constructed and durable. It took me a while to cut through it. Why did I cut through the cable?.... .because the locks are GARBAGE. I bought 4 of these locks for my kayaks. 3 of them worked great a couple times of locking and unlocking then they seized up. I had to saw through the cable to unlock my kayak. Great concept though. They just need to figure out how to make a lock that works. In the meantime I would avoid this product.
