Is It Necessary To Own A Reel As A Recreational Diver?

  • Dive reels are an essential item when exploring wrecks, caverns/caves, search and recovery, or releasing a delayed SMB.
  • Reels are a diver's safety line. Reels and lines are a tried and true way for divers to return to their starting point.
  • Simply anchor your line to a point just outside the cave opening or at the entrance point of the wreck and unroll your line from the spool as you progress through the dive.
  • When it is time to exit the cave or wreck, turn around and slowly wind the line back onto the reel until you've exited the cave/wreck.
  • Wreck divers are encouraged to tie off their lines to anchor points inside the wreck to avoid tangling the line on any debris within the wreck.

Top Tips for Using Reels Underwater!!!

  • Keep the line taut to prevent possible entanglement.
  • Choose the correct size of the reel, with the correct length of line, for the task in question.
  • Do not wind more line on a reel than it is designed for — it will jam.
  • If the line has been rewound onto a reel when slack, unspool it and reload it under tension before using it again. Badly wound reels can jam or the line can lock in the loose coils when released under tension.
  • When deploying s DSMB, do not attach the reel to yourself. Be prepared to let a DSMB and reel go if there are any entanglement problems when you deploy the buoy.
  • Use bolt snaps rather than carabiners (suicide clips) to prevent lines from accidentally getting caught when clipping on.
  • Small reels may appeal in the dive shop but make sure you can use them when wearing gloves.

These reels are fantastic!!! Super easy to use, and plenty of room in the finger hole to hold it with two fingers, which is super comfortable!! The only thing I don't like, that I did away with was the black end loop, and the swivel. The swivel is just a failure point, and the black loop on the end is not conducive to easy usage if you are having to make a couple of wraps around a rock or the such in a cave diving environment. I cut the swivel and black line off, and put a big loop on the end to fit the spool through. Great purchase, and really the right tool for the job!!!

Had a plastic hand reel that broke so I was looking for something that would last. It’s definitely a cheaply manufactured product but pretty sturdy. I’ll probably order 2 more.

This reel is significantly better than the cheap (but almost the same price) plastic reels that barely hold the crappy twisted line they come with. This feels substantial in your hand without being overly bulky or heavy. The finish is nice. The edge of the reel has enough roughness to provide grip while not being abrasive. It easily holds 100’+ of line without seeming over-full or blocking the snap holes. The line is nice too. Easy to see in the water, even in poor viz, and resistant to both abrasion and tangling. The bolt snap is good. No rust, and it still operates smoothly after saltwater use, though I did put some silicone lube on the sliding pieces. Overall, very happy with this spool. It’s my favorite one for shooting an SMB or for towing a dive buoy.

Seems to be well made, time will tell. Like any other equipment exposed to salt water I do recommend cleaning in fresh water later so the components don't corrode. Reel came as described and was much less than some of the other name brand reels out there. Goes on every dive.

The reel works very well and I am very happy with it.The large holes make it easy to clip it with a double ender, and the swivel clip seems really sturdy. The reel itself is a bit bigger than I expected it to be, which is taking me a bit of getting used to compared to my old finger spool (the basic cheap plastic kind), so do keep that in mind.Another minor issue is that the loop on the other side of the swivel clip is too small to fit over the reel. But I was able to solve this quite easily by just cutting the plastic shrink wrapped plastic at the end of it a bit to make the loop slightly bigger.

This spool reel is a good value and works great for SMBs or as an emergency reel.

First used this item during wreck dives August 2024. The stainless clip and finger spool works as described but the line is a problem. Due to the flat profile of the line it twisted when trying to reel it back up. There is a swivel near the end but it is useless when using 2 tie off points during penetration dives. As you know, there are many factors that go into wreck penetration and having a twisted line during retrieval is a problem.A round braided line would be much better and less inclined to twist. Or move the swivel point 10-15 feet into line to give room for tie off.
