The last one I got from the local welding supply seemed to be lighter duty. This one has been going strong for a few years now.

Glad this came with two holders because the first one I tried out of the package wouldn't hold the soap stone tight enough to try to mark anything with it. It would just push back up into the holder, the other one works great

These are the best soap stone pens I have found. Go with these and you won’t have any problems.

They work great for what I needed them for. Makes marking my steel easy when drawing out dimensions before I forge.

I have a fine line chalk pencil that I've used almost exclusively for the past several years. I bought this on the recommendation of fellow artists. If one is painting rocks and using any manner of a template, be advised that this soapstone "pencil" is fairly wide, meaning not fine, despite that it has a point. Also, I've found that unless one is working on a flat, matte base (I use black gesso) that this tool's markings just don't show up. If one is using an acrylic base with some gloss to it, this doesn't work at all. When I've used it, it reminds me of using a crayon with lots of little bits (shavings?) assemble and make it a little difficult to see what has been drawn, what has stuck, etc. without constantly blowing off the refuse. I don't know..it may work better on a canvas as I've only used it successfully on matte black rocks. I'll keep working with it because I want to like it. Not sure yet.

Used to use wax pens and these are a fine upgrade.
