About this item

  • SUPER-SHARP CUTTING: 3M Precision-Shaped Grain maintains super-sharp points that cut exceptionally fast with less pressure
  • LONGER DISC LIFE: Our product's disc life is significantly longer, allowing you to complete more parts per disc and requiring fewer disc changes
  • REDUCED CHANGEOUTS AND DOWNTIME: Experience reduced changeouts and downtime in manual, robotic, and pressure-assisted applications
  • LONG-LASTING PERFORMANCE: The triangular shaped ceramic grain lasts up to two times longer than other ceramic abrasives, wearing evenly, running cool, and optimizing mineral breakdown
  • DURABLE AND TEAR-RESISTANT: The stiff fiber backing and strong resin bond provide durability and tear-resistance, making it ideal for heavyweight applications such as high-pressure weld grinding and beveling
  • For industrial/occupational use only. Not for consumer sale or use

Product Description

Boost productivity in your shop with the fast-cutting, long-lasting 3M Cubitron II Fibre Disc 982C. This ceramic grinding disc uses 36+ grit 3M Precision-Shaped Grain to generate up to twice the cut-rate of other fibre discs. This ceramic grain lasts exceptionally long, continuously fracturing into super-sharp points and edges that slice cleanly through metal. By grinding faster than other discs, this 3M fibre disc allows you to complete more parts and boost productivity. The built-in tinnerman nut (TN) quick change attachment allows for easy screw-on disc changes. A stiff fiber backing and strong resin bond mean this resin fibre disc is durable enough for heavyweight applications like high-pressure weld grinding and beveling. With durability comes longer abrasive life, reducing the amount of time spent changing out abrasives and further boosting productivity. All of these metal grinding productivity gains come with less grinding pressure exerted by the operator. In robotic or pressure-assisted operations, 3M Cubitron II Fibre Disc 982C helps reduce downtime in the cell by lasting exceptionally long and maintaining a high cut-rate through the entire life of the disc. This 4.5 inch grinding disc can be used with either pneumatic or electric tools. 3M 982C fibre disc is optimized for use on carbon steel. For stainless steel, consider using 3M™ Cubitron II Fibre Disc 987C

From the Manufacturer

The 3M™ Cubitron™ II Fibre Disc 982C with TN quick-change attachment delivers superior optimum performance and productivity with less operator fatigue when tackling high pressure grinding applications such as medium to heavy-duty stock removal on carbon steel applications. Featuring 3M’s exceptionally high-performing ceramic Precision-Shaped Grain (PSG) combined with a stiff fiber backing, this disc is an excellent choice for edge chamfering, beveling, and removing carbon steel welds, mill scale, pits and imperfections, machining grooves, and more. It delivers outstanding cut rates and disc life, runs cooler, and requires less grinding pressure than other conventional ceramic discs. The stiff fiber backing and strong resin bond provide added durability and tear-resistance for heavyweight applications such as high-pressure weld grinding, and support wet or dry applications.

Experience the Powerful Performance of 3M™ Cubitron™ II
3M Cubitron II products have raised the bar for high-performing abrasives. 3M™ Precision-Shaped Grain outcuts and outlasts conventional ceramic industrial abrasives and requires less grinding force to achieve superior performance. The result is that operators can grind faster and complete more parts per disc with less muscle-work and fatigue.

To create PSG, 3M engineers started with 3M™ Ceramic Abrasive Grain and used proprietary technology to form the grains into triangular structures and electrostatically orient them on the backing to form sharp peaks that maximize cutting potential. These peaks slice cleanly through metal like a knife through butter, rather than gouging or plowing as traditional abrasives do, and continuously self-sharpen as the points break off. This generates a super-fast cut and lessens heat build-up due to friction, reducing heat-related stress cracks and discoloration.

PSG also wears evenly, and because the abrasive itself stays cooler and sharper, Cubitron II products last significantly longer than their conventional ceramic counterparts, ensuring extended high performance in production applications.

Disc Changes are Quicker with TN Quick Change Attachment

A TN attachment fiber disc has a 7/8 inch center hole that holds a thin gauge metal single-use nut, eliminating the need for a separate disc retainer nut. This TN assembly provides convenient attachment to and removal from the tool, making it easy to switch discs between applications. TN stands for Tinnerman Nut and is named after the company that originally invented this system.

Fiber Discs—Ideal for Tough Grinding Applications

Fiber discs are heavy-duty discs ideal for weld removal, grinding, and blending large and small areas of metal surfaces. They feature a tough, stiff backing made from hardened fibers that resist wear and can handle tough grinding applications.

You're not going to believe me until you try them yourselves, nobody ever does. I use these as a shipyard Fitter/Welder, I've used them building rock crusher 4X4 bumpers and I've used them making electrical boxes. These are more aggressive than a hard grinding disk on a 9" when it comes to material removal & leave a paintable smooth finish for heavy industrial applications. They take off about as much steel (just much faster) than a hard disk before they're worn out, and they're safer because they can't explode. These are ceramic grinding disks, they're not just sanding disks. These save tons of time finishing and deliver much higher quality than hard disks. You really do have to try them to believe it though because they do LOOK like sanding disks. Their only downfall is that the edges, if you're a welder. They're not for fixing lumpy fillets because if only using the edge you'll wear it out quickly, and waste money being as these are rather pricy. That, and if you use them on welds that haven't cooled for a few minuets you'll get a much shorter life out of them due to the heat. So if you're primarily a welder, I'd stick to hard disks. If you're a fitter and you need to remove a lot of metal real quick & leave a high quality finish while coping or blending, these will save you a ton of time and money. Good luck, and don't forget to buy a backing pad if you try them.

These are just about indestructible. The grind and blend metal so fast and cleans and they last forever. Well worth the money

Got the 7" 36 grit discs that have the little metal ring and tabs. Trying to find the proper backing pad and nut has been impossible to figure out. It says in the description that it uses the 3m GL (grit lock) attachment system, but I can't find one that is compatible with 7" pads, and I can't even figure out how it works or what it looks like. Not a single video on YouTube, no links or parts numbers. total pain in the butt! Common y'all!

Simply the fastest grind I’ve seen for removing welds in sheet metal to make flat. Lasts much longer than I thought. The metal shards/dust really flies so wear a respirator mask and goggles. Now looking for the equivalent of this for use in tighter spots as this is good for flat and open areas but the big 4.5” grinder won’t fit in tight spots or work well on uneven areas - there is no grinding edge like on a fixed hard grind wheel, so can't turn on edge to get on a narrow area. For flat open spots you’d think it was wood not steel as it goes away so fast.

I've been in the business for forty years and these have to be the best discs I've ever used. I use them for weld blending. They are fast and long lasting. I would highly recommend.

Love cubitrons…. They grind metal like nothing else… this seller “contractor source” sucks tho.. they keep sending me the wrong ones.. I’m ordering the quick change version that have the metal screw nut in the center but they keep sending the non quick change version that requires an extra piece in addition to the backing pad…. Too many extra parts to keep track of in the field and that if nut gets dropped and lost the pads are useless…. The quick change version can be screwed on to a 1/8 grinding disc, no extra parts needed, nothing to lose..

It cleans off light millscale then polishes after it has been wore out. Pain to change out. Gets so tight on the backing pad I have to use channel locks to take off.
