Great for breaking the eggs without a mess

This egg cracker / separator works mediocre. You have to buy just the right size eggs or it won't work. While it cracks eggs cleanly most of the time, the separator is hard to use and damages most yolks. Probably not worth it for most people.

We picked this up thinking that it might be a helpful tool for those with gripping and strength challenges in their hands (speaking from experience, here). Nope, in fact, this became a Rube Goldberg situation.First, I had to push the metal prongs out of the way in order to get the un-remarkably average-sized egg in place (photo 1)Next, as I was trying to close the contraption, one of the metal prongs popped off. You had one job, prong. One job. (photo 2)But hey, we're not quitters here, and with this review in mind, we persisted. I put the prong back in and attempted to crack the egg. It.was.impossible. In the third photo, you can see that both prongs gave up (as did I) with only a tiny scratch on the egg. This is a good time to mention I was using an organic egg, which tends to have an easier to crack shell. Bottom line, if you have any muscle atrophy, dexterity challenges, etc, you're not alone; but save your dollars and don't buy this.

We had hoped this would work for hard boiled eggs. But I honestly didn’t look close enough at how this gadget works to realize that can’t really happen. If you try on a hard boiled egg you just get a dusty crumble puncture and are still in the same position of peeling any hard boiled egg.I have no problem cracking eggs, but my partner can’t do it without dropping shell fragments in. So we both also tried it on raw eggs when making breakfast. First, the eggs shown are large, and the largest of them barely fit, so I’m not sure if it could handle a jumbo egg. Next… if not obvious, it works by placing an egg inside, closing it, then pushing the two metal prongs into the egg. If you push all the way it pierces the yolk, but just a little and only the shell is cracked. You seem to need to open the container with the prongs still depressed to get it to pull the shell apart. For me, this was just extra steps and extra cleaning. But my partner managed to crack 4 eggs without a single piece of shell getting in the bowl… so to me it seemed like a win. But he also felt like it was a lot of extra work. So I’m not sure if he’ll use it in the future or not.The hunt for the perfect hard-boiled egg shell removal process continues!

Got this to help peeling hard boiled eggs, as description touts it for that (though no photos with such eggs). Just removing the first one from its plastic, one of the two metal pieces fell out. The have continued to fall out of each of the units when we have been testing. Annoying. But anyway, how did it work on hard boiled eggs? Badly! It cracked the eggshell, but since it cut into the egg white, it caused the white to tear away from the center yolk when opened. Uh, this is not what we wanted. Metal ends simply penetrate too far. Did not bother trying on raw eggs, as I have no trouble cracking them. Cannot recommend!

I have used this a total of 6 times so far and it cracked the egg each time. I didn't have the issues some people had with the metal piece coming off. It stayed in place just fine. The shell stayed in the container as well (I used the pink one). My issue is that when cracked, the tiniest bit of "shell dust" was in the bowl. If the shell was bigger I could get it out; however, this literally was like dust and I just had to mix it in. I didn't get any crunchy bits so that's good. So if you don't mind shell dust this works great. I think it's still easier to just crack an egg by hand. Now my son would love it because he can't crack an egg without all the shell pieces going into the bowl.
