A capacitor is an electric component that temporarily stores an electrical charge. A dual "run capacitor" supports two electric motors, such as in large air conditioner or heat pump units, with both a fan motor and a compressor motor. It saves space by combining two physical capacitors into one case. The dual capacitor has three terminals labeled "C", "FAN", and "HERM", which stand for the *C*ommon, Fan, and *HERM*etically sealed compressor.

Dual capacitors come in a variety of sizes, depending on the capacitance (µF or MFD), such as 40 plus 5 µF, and also the voltage. A 440 volt capacitor can be used in place of a 370 volt, as it is build better, but the 370 can’t be used in place of a 440 volt. It will work for a while and will fail prematurely, as exceeding the capacitor's rated voltage will cause the dielectric to break down and the capacitor to short out. Same as an electric wire- 600V rated wire is better than 300V one .The capacitance(µF or MFD) must be the same or stay within 10%+ or 5%- of its original value . Example: 50 µF cap can be substituted by 47.5 to 55 µF with the same or better voltage ratings capacitor .

Round cylinder-shaped dual run capacitors are commonly used for air conditioning, to help in the starting of the compressor and the condenser fan motor.Round capacitor can be used to substitute oval shape one with the same MFD AND Volt specs

  • You will ask “Why I need a Cap that is rated 440V in my A/C?”
  • Answer: You need to realize that a motor is an inductive device. When the supply voltage is applied to the motor run winding, the voltage across the start winding will be increased to a higher voltage value. A motor acts like a transformer with the run winding acting as the primary and the start winding acting as the secondary. This is why the capacitor has a much higher voltage rating than the 230 being the supply voltage.
  • If a Capacitor is not EIA-456-A approved means it is not approved for US market.

Purchased for an AC condenser fan assembly. Found install went well and it appears of good quality. In operation for months now and no signs of any issues. Hopefully will last for years. Would buy again.

Keep an extra on the shelf in the event the old ones fail. These work fine.

I purchased this to replace a failing capacitor on my A/C system. Easy to replace and it worked fine until it just died this week. Installed June 2021 and died June 2024, so only 3 years. But I live in the Phoenix, AZ area where the summers are in the 110's easily, so you'll probably have better luck in a cooler region.

Came home from the beach with an 86 degree house. Heat pump not running although thermostat was set to 72. Since it was after business hours at the HVAC parts store, I looked on Amazon and found this capacitor. Ordered, and it arrived at 7am next morning. I installed it in 10 minutes. Cold air!

Usually your cool not blowing is normally 2 culprits. The capacitor and Freon. Of course it can be other things too like the contact or a leak in the lines somewhere. You can change this yourself and save a lot of money. Just be sure to turn of the unit, disconnect the circuit out near the outside unit and it’s safe to go ahead and move the switch to off in your breaker box somewhere in the home. When to change it, Take a picture of how the wires are connected to the capacitor then disconnect the wires and replace the capacitor.**Note before changing, dissipate any charge that may still be built up in the bad cap by using a screwdriver and placing it across the terminals on top of the capacitor. This should release any electrical charge stored in it. Connect your wires back on your new capacitor by your pic you took so you know what wire or wires was connected to the: HERM, COMMON & FAN terminal. (The capacitor turns on the Compressor which pushes the Freon through the system to cool your home. Most cases, your unit may not put out cool air most likely the compressor is not kickin on. ( The unit itself is just blowing.)

During a scheduled preventative maintenance I was told my capacitor was below specification. They quoted $250 to replace it. A quick video and a little research and I was able to easily do it myself for $12.
