How to use

1>Affix one leg of tool. Hooks on both ends of leg should engage coil spring

2>Be sure that movable hex nuts are threaded onto bolt and seated in hex holes of double hook. Hand tighten bolt.

3>Affix second leg of tool on opposite side of coil spring in same manner as done for first leg. Hand tighten bolt.

4>Apply safety hooks to spring with flange and wing nuts. Assemble to each leg and coil spring. Wing nuts should be finger tight

5>Compress coil spring using hand tool or impact gun with 15/16" socket. Turn each bolt alternately so that compression of spring is equal on each side.

6>Compress until the ends of the spring are completely free of the spring seats at each end of the coil. Total compression required isusually not more than 3"

7>Remove upper bearing dust cap on MacPherson strut to expose piston rod nut. 8>Remove piston rod nut, upper bearing plate and upper coil spring seat.

9>Remove coil spring in compressed condition and set aside. Shock absorber is now exposed to be fixed or replaced

10>Reassemble all components in reverse order. Be sure coil spring seats are reassembled so that they match ends of coil spring.

11>Loosen each leg evenly and allow the ends of coil spring to contact the seat properly. Remove each leg. 12>Repaired MacPherson Strut is now ready to be reinstalled on vehicle.

These are well-built and strong - should compress most springs without issue. I needed them to work on motorcycle shocks and was a bit skeptical that they could work, but they did. Motorcycle shocks are obviously too small in diameter to engage both tangs on these compressors. However, you really need to engage one tang to get the job done. I put one of each side of the shock and ran a hard steel shaft through the bottom shock mount to catch the other end of the compressor. Worked like a charm. A few turns of the shaft screws and the spring was compressed enough to release the spring retainers and I was ready to go. Great too at a great price.

I used these for swapping springs on 4 struts so far. Worked great, although I was only able to use one of the two teeth on either end. Otherwise the contraption gets in the way of removing the strut, or putting the new one in, let alone being able to compress it. But it works great with just one tooth on each end. Just gotta be careful.I used an impact wrench to drive the compression. Switch between the two screws frequently, not to squeeze too hard from one side, making the other one fall off... It worked like a charm, saved me a bunch of money already.Given the size, I'm not sure these would work for motorcycle shocks. You probably want something a lot smaller for that in case you wondered.

I am impressed by what LOOKS like good quality materials, but the design makes them impossible to use when the struts are on the car if you do not have about a foot of clearance ABOVE the coil on the strut!* I know this tool is primarily intended to disassemble struts on the bench, but I wanted to compress the springs to change the strut mounts without removing the entire assembly. Can't do it with these. One of the end clamps is free floating on the screw, and the other one is threaded. To compress the spring, the center screw needs to be cranked through the end clamp so that it extends past it. This means it absolutely CANNOT be used if there is not available space above the top of the coil.I am going to see if I can find a couple of big nuts to go on the screw below the free-floating piece so that the spring can be compressed without having to turn the screw in.Since I have not been able to actually use this tool yet, I cannot properly comment on the strength or smoothness.

Best price for the money! Even cheaper than Harbor Freight! They are nothing special and do the job just fine! These are big enough to do truck springs and will go small enough to do compact cars. The other compressors with "safety features" are just sales gimmicks. I have no reservations about buying these and will use them in the future!

It worked very well. Light car coil springs all day long . Now my Chevy silverado coil springs they did it but they was done. Used and abused they held up. And I used an 1/2" impact they held up to that too.
