This model is most widely used for Raw Maple Sap testing and for Synthetic or Semi-Synthetic Machining Coolants This is THE unit of choice for Reams Testing (RBTI)! This unit is TWICE as accurate as 0-32% models! This model is handy for the testing of low sugar fruits and vegetables, Reamsian Bodily Fluids (per the Reams Biological Theory of Ionization), Maple Sap or for synthetic or semi-synthetic coolants. For machining and grinding coolants, please consult the Technical Data Sheet for appropriate concentration of fluid. This model is designed to give HIGHLY accurate readings with 0.10 Brix divisions (accuracy is +/- 0.10 Brix). All RHB models use ambient light, no battery or power source is required. Models with the “ATC” suffix are equipped with “Automatic Temperature Compensation” for accurate measurements without recalibration after shifts in ambient working temperature (field use). This refractometer works very well for sugar in urine testing as well as for brix testing in plants.

Sap promised to flow early and I wondered at the sugar content. Ordered the refractometer on Sunday night, tapped on Wednesday, instrument arrived Thursday. Factory calibration showed 0% with distilled water so no adjustment necessary. Thursday sap started and temperature rose to an unprecedented 69 degrees. The run was 72 hours. Brix 3.1 at the start, 2.5 at the end. Dropped to 2.0 and now after a freeze is back up at 2.2.Even if you don't need this it's a great instrument. Easy to read - a focussing eyepiece. Easier yet in bright sun or a bright lightbulb. Nice case. Eyedropper thoughtfully included. I use 4 drops and get a smooth spread. The values appear consistent with my boiling results. Will report on use with salt if I remember this summer. Note this is Brix 0-10 sap, not syrup; for syrup you need a different instrument Brix 66-67 included in its range.

I use the Ade Advanced Optics Ade 0-10% ATC BRIX Refractometer for my Birch Syrup. I like to see what the percentage is per tapped Birch tree. It varies from tree to tree even in the same area. I check for the highest BRIX count in the sap then tap the higher readings only. You definitely need this refractometer, if you want to save time in making great tasting syrup.

Ordered the refractometer for sap. Bought sap version as shown by the middle label. Looked in side and you can see it says salinity - salt. It does look like it can do the job. Feels well made. Hopefully I can return with out cost to me and get the right kind. minus 3 stars for the wrong item. It could be a 5 star item.Added another star for Amazon's amazing simple return policy. If it is their fault, they own it. Nice to see in a company.

I use this in the field to assess the quality of sap coming from maple trees during the spring. It has saves me time and has paid for itself in giving me the ability to identify the best producing trees with the highest sugar percentage. Example - I tap my tree and immediately test the sap in the field. I'm looking for 2% or better sugar content. If it's less than 2%, I pull that tap and head to the next tree. When I find trees with 3%+ JACKPOT!Making maple syrup is expensive...this tool will save you time and money and allow you to focus on the trees that are producing the best quality sap for production. It is a priceless tool in my opinion!

Please do not order this if you want what is described. The ad states 0-10% Brix scale and shows a hard case. The product I received was in a soft case and was for measuring salinity and a 0-100% Brix. I returned the item and asked them to get it right....they sent me the same incorrect one again. If you are measuring concentrations of solutions between 0-10% Brix, then you know a 0-100% Brix scale would make it much more difficult to take accurate readings.

Very accurate and great when I tapped my trees for maple water to drink. Couldn’t do the job without this.
