This is a water based product so is extremely easy to use with a garden sprayer - the one you pump to create pressure. The package warns you that it will stiffen the fibers if the carpet isn't brushed or raked. I used it in a newly built house, so had purchased a wide broom for the garage which had not been used - and it was perfect to rake the carpet after application! All the carpets are soft on bare feet. I haven't spilled anything on them yet, and I am reluctant to test it, but I applied two coats and hope it will repel soiling.
