The baren works as intended, and can help achieve a smoothing down of paper and ink/paint.I'm using it on a gel plate, and the felted bottom surface does not move as smoothly as I would like. It could be that there are two "giving" surfaces against one another and this is far more appropriate for linocuts than gel printing.

I’m a hobbiest and this is a good little baren for my needs. I got it for various paper activites – gelatin plate printing, collage, large stamps, etc. I’ve had no problems with using it. The handle has a nice fit to my hand, the felt is secure on the bottom (don’t know how easily removing/replacing it will go, but it is nice that an extra pad is included.) What I do doesn’t require a lot of pressure – I want to even out the pressure and this baren is quite adequate.

Works "okay". Felt covering doesn't work very well directly on the paper. I had to use glassine paper over the actual paper in order for it to glide without wearing off the felt. Don't know how long the felting will last, especially if making a large amount of prints. It did come with one extra piece of felt. Also, the pressing part is not rounded as some other types of Barnes are.

This baren is well made. The plastic handle is perfectly fitted for your hand to grip. It includes extra felt pads that you can change out if needed. I love how wide the base is for evenly spreading out the pressure when printmaking. It is the perfect size and weight and is a great, low-cost solution for at-home printmaking.

The other baren i own doesn't have felt on the bottom and seems a little smoother to work with than this one, especially on papers with more texture. That said, they're close to identical in every other way, so I can't complain much. I'm hoping it'll smooth out with further use.

Compact yet effective, this tool is perfect for paper printing and performs wonderfully. Occasionally, the felt pad may not glide smoothly if the surface underneath is rough. The tool is well-balanced and equipped with sturdy handles—a fine little baren indeed!
