This sharpener is amazing. Initially it does waste lead, color, etc as it forms a long point. I have used these with polychromes, prisma, black wing pearl pencil and luminance colored pencils. What I like is that you get a stronger point and it gives for options to be able to get more color on a page without wasting so much lead. So far I have seen less breakage and longer lasting point. I love how much stronger my pencil feels even when I press hard to give more of a pigmented effect on my page. I am an artist and a doodler. I have also used these on my kids pencils and they also mentioned that they noticed they don’t have to sharpen as often. This is easy to use. Pricey for a sharpener but I think it’s worth every penny.

The best, sharpest, and longest point I’ve ever gotten with any other sharpener.

I bought this last August and initially wrote a review about the very sketchy documentation. I still have that opinion. It did sharpen pencils well, although the auto-stop feature did not seem to be very effective. Maybe it was just too subtle for me. The battery lasts a long time, which is nice, because pulling the teeny-tiny cable out of the base is kind of a pain, and then it does not work while it is being charged. I recently had a problem where it just stopped working. I am not sure if the battery needed charging or if shavings got into a tiny little interlock where a peg at the bottom of the shavings compartment has to go all the way in before it the motor will run. I tried cleaning out the shavings compartment. I VACUUMED out the shavings compartment. I opened a case with the manufacturer (they did reply, but their suggestions were what I was already doing.) Nothing seemed to help. I use my pencil sharpener a lot because I do colored pencil drawings, so I bought an AFMAT manual one that I now like WAY better. Finally today I picked up the electric one and pounded it onto my hand a few times fairly hard and then pushed the shavings compartment cover closed as hard as I could (again) and it suddenly worked. My theory is either a loose connection or that sensor below the shavings compartment. But my advice is to buy the manual one for less than half the price and save yourself the aggravation.

Wow! This electric pencil sharpener is the best product I have bought this year for sure. I charged it with the USB cable when I got it and I have been using it for a month and it is still going strong. It will sharpen anything: graphite, colored pencil, charcoal pencils, eraser pencils...whatever you got to throw at it, it gets the job done. The varying levels of tips are just as advertised and the longest tip is very long. Most of the time it gets things very sharp. Colored pencils sometimes might not be as sharp on the first try, but will sharpen with an extra try, or two. I wouldn't recommend using the longest tip setting for an eraser pencil. It shortened the thing down too much. Other than that this product is a game changer. It sharpens in no time flat, around 30 seconds for the longest setting. If you don't need that it would take less time. It is also very easy to dump the pencil shavings.

Really enjoying the Afmat artist sharpener. Using for colored pencils, and doesn’t break the extra long points. You can sharpen lead pencils to a needle point. Holds a lot of shavings too. Now if it lasts a few years, i will be completely happy.

The sharpener makes a nice long sharp point on your pencils.

Sharpens a great point but make sure the shavings door closes properly otherwise it won’t work. It’s a good safety mechanism, but the door design lacks an ease of use.

I’d been unhappy with my Exacto pencil sharpener because it seemed the points always broke off before I got a really sharp point...and I ended up gringing more pencil into the shavings than I actually used...and it broke the leads. I’m not thrilled about shaving the wood down and then using sandpaper, either...uses too much of my drawing time. So, when I heard there were sharpeners actually designed for artists to give them the long points I’d been looking for, I found this one. I got it and love it. In fact, I ordered second one for the spot where I sit and draw at night. (The first one was for my studio.) it’s really sturdy, well made and easy to use. One caution though, everything on it fits together really tight. It was hard to rotate from a small to a larger diameter size. And, the first time I emptied it, it took a little coaxing to do that. But, that’s not a bad thing. I highly recommend...good value..much much better for artists than the electric Exacto...

If you expect a point superior to standard hand held sharpener; suitable for various techniques then this is for you. I have previously bought a well known middle priced brand's products. However my most recent purchase was a real disaster so much so that I seriously doubted it was a genuine branded device. Amazon refunded and given the discount I decided it was time to upgrade. Very satisfied but for the money think dual power source would have been more convenient for use away from the studio.

Not only does this do an excellent point on woodless graphite pencils (which I highly recommend putting in occassionally to lubricate the blades of helical sharpeners), but it's been working fine with Pitt Pastel and Stabilo Carbothello pastel pencils. Don't try to sharpen a pastel, even a harder one like an Indian Red, to a fill on point - they simply aren't that robust and they will shatter at the end. But you can get them to a long exposed amount and finalise it with some wet&dry if you want a sharp point. (If you want to sharpen to a Karl Gnass type of exposed amount, this is ideal.) All up, this is a great sharpener that has exceeded my expectations.

Tried this charcoal pencil sharpener with a beautiful set of charcoal pencils, which arrived at the same time. It literally ATE the pencils. It was not even said to the highest nib setting and this is the result! Disgusted and it will be going back
