About this item

  • This traditional weather station is both a work of art and an instrument at home in any fine study, library, office or upscale restaurant. The rich, wood framed classic weather station measures barometric pressure (liquid). The antique weather station displays an air of quality and accuracy one would expect with a fine, handcrafted weather instrument from Ambient Weather.
  • The concept that 'decreasing atmospheric pressure predicts stormy weather' was postulated by Lucien Vidie -- and it's the basis for a weather prediction device called a storm glass or liquid barometer. It consists of a glass container with a sealed body, half filled with water.
  • A narrow spout connects to the body below the water level and rises above the water level, where it is open to the atmosphere. When the air pressure is lower than it was at the time the body was sealed, the water level in the spout will rise above the water level in the body and when the air pressure is higher, the water level in the spout will drop below the water level in the body.
  • Also includes a comfortmeter, which measures temperature and humidity, and a comfort zone indicator.
  • Includes 1 year Ambient Weather Warranty

I bought this for my mom for Christmas. As a kid, we used to have a liquid weather barometer hanging in our kitchen, and she said all she wanted for Christmas was a new one, since the one from my childhood broke in a move. I think she totally forgot she told me she wanted one, because months later, at Christmas, she cried when she pulled this out of the box. The wooden backing is beautiful, the glass feels high quality and was well packaged in styrofoam. It even has a little drip tray in case the water overflows from the barometer pipe. Beautiful! Glad I ordered it!

I've always wanted a liquid barometer. I had no problem at all setting this up. A few days after having it hung on my wall I had looked outside and the sky was looking very stormy. I didn't actually notice my barometer at the time, however, after the rain had passed I noticed liquid in the overflow dish. This is unique wall display, and a fun conversation wall decor.I would buy it again.

I ordered this barometric pressure indicator as an interesting weather item to hang on my wall. I wasn't looking for a thermometer or hygrometer, this one just happened to have both included for a reasonable cost. My home is filled with interesting items and gadgets, and many antiques - so the thought of having an old-school item such as this has always appealed to me. I received exactly what it is intended to be: an interesting wall piece based on old-school technology. It is not of particularly high quality: it is not lead crystal glass, the wood base is not hand-carved by German Black Forest craftsmen out of some exotic wood, and the instruments at the top are not high-end or expensive... but it looks neat and it is a conversation piece. Out of the box I noted first that the two screws provided to mount the drip cup bracket were undersized - they would not even begin to tighten in the holes, so I simply replaced them with a slightly thicker set. The screw provided with wall anchor for hanging the unit did not fit the bracket: the head was too large in diameter, so I simply drilled the bracket hole out a little larger (or you could find yourself a screw with a smaller head), and all was fine. A bit annoying, yes... but it was not an expensive unit so the extra $0.02 in screws and 2 minutes of effort I had to apply was no big deal.It would be great if the glass had markings for filling and noting changes in barometric pressure, but this item is intended to be more of an interesting visual indicator than a precise, calibrated measuring instrument. Once it's filled and installed (fill the glass to about 1" above the top of the neck outlet) adjustments can be made to the inside and neck levels using the supplied syringe: you must first determine what is the current barometric pressure in your area which you can obtain online from any local weather service. Standard pressure is 29.92 inHg, so at that atmospheric pressure the level inside the glass should be equal to the level in the neck. If your current barometric pressure is higher than 29.92, the level inside the glass should be higher than in the neck, and vice-versa. When pressure drops, the water goes up the neck - when it rises, the water goes down the neck. You will probably need to check it over a few days with varying pressures in order to get it relatively close. You can get a small rubber o-ring from the plumbing section of your local hardware store and slip it down over the neck to note minute changes from day to day.Again, this is more of an interesting conversation piece and decoration - and that is how it is priced. No visible defects or flaws (other than the screws) - I'm happy with the product!!!

My husband is a science teacher and by nature is a weather junky. This is a very nice piece of weather equipment that adorns our wall. it really goes nice with the Galilean thermometer as well. Not only does my husband enjoy "predicting" the weather by observing the barometric pressure, it also is great indicator as to when he can expect sinus pressure issues and he can attack the symptoms ahead of the game. This hangs flat against the wall, smooth back. Easy installation and set-up. It includes very basic instructions and they have included a small syringe and tubing to fill the jar with water. The only thing we had to supply was a screw, water, and food coloring. It is a very nice conversation piece that is also practical. For the price, we expected lower quality, however this is a solid piece of wood with solid construction.

This was perfect. I had one for years and I finally dropped it while cleaning it. I needed a replacement, I saw this and figured I would give it a try. It's great. Looks great. And appears to work just fine.

I renovated a room and decorated it with a nautical theme. This weather station was a perfect addition to the decor, and it was offered at a fabulous price. This same piece goes for about 3 times the price than it is here on Amazon. It was very well padded and packaged, and showed up in perfect condition. The instructions were easy to follow and they even provide you a bit of history regarding the origin of this weather station. Not only is it functional, it's beautiful wall art and a great conversation piece. In addition to it being a barometer, it also displays the temperature and the humidity level as well, and even shows the "comfort zone" between temperature and humidity. While it's not "exact science" it's close enough to accurately indicate weather conditions. At this incredible price, it would make an excellent gift for those in your life who love all things nautical. I'm very pleased with my purchase.~ jade ~

I was impressed with packaging and how elegant this is. It was a lot harder to fill than I thought. First the tubing would get stuck and I was being careful to not break the glass. I spent time massaging and stretching the tubing to get it in. Then after it was in the water a while it went in easier. I guesstimated correct amount. It would be easier if there was a fill line. Someone else’s review said the two levels of water should be even at 29 barometric pressure. Ours is indicating low in spout as it is high pressure today so seems to working. My son who is learning about Barometric pressure helped me put this together and is fascinated by it looking forward to watching it! If nothing happens i’ll Empty it a little.

As an avid comfort-meter, thermometer collector, this one's no frills ,yet looks upscale and accurate. You have to fill the storm glass with your own pigment (e.g. food colouring).

I like this item. I had a different one but my daughter managed to break it. It gives a cool visual of the barometric pressure which I am interested in as a migraine sufferer. I used green food coloring this time as I ran out of blue and I like the look of it.

Love this wall mount it sits on the wall in line with my railing so I can look at it as I am going out the door. Particularly before fishing as I am trying to see if barometric pressure effects my fishing success. I like this old system for its antique scientific look but also because it is easy to tell if pressure is rising falling high or low. Doesn't give you numbers but I've always been an estimation type guy anyhow and its nice to look at it while trying to guess the pressure. I just go to the weather forecast to see where the current barometric pressure is then remember roughly where that is on the spout.
