When I purchased I pulled the trigger too quick. Considerations were I needed 2, they came with the socket and it was a good price. They were for 40 gallon tanks. I had failed to remember I needed the 4' ones. They must go to the bottom of the tank.To install set your tank gas valve to pilot. Shut water off. Screw hose to drain if using. Open valve. Only drain off a few gallons. If not draining well if u can get the drain valve off and poke something around to loosen sediment. Make sure you are extremely careful if a plastic one flush out valve well in open position. This would only b in a murphys law situation. Close valve and fill again perhaps. I say that because if the anode is stuck in the tank the full tank will help as the 320# of water will help to hold the tank in position.(Before as noted b4 drain off a few gallons. The anode in under a 2" ish plastic cap on the top of the tank. Pry it off and there is a hex head at the top of the shaft. It is 27 mm ir 1-1/16".You may b able to get out w a ratchet and socket. I have done 3x b4. In every instance I had to put a pipe on ratched for more leverage. This time I used an a 1/2" electric impact gun. It came out rather expediently.Put teflon and pipe dope. One or other is fine I do both. Once installed. Open water supply and fill. I always flush the tank a few times after. Water supply off open valve and drain. Its faster ifu blow the t/p valve.Make sure to reset again when filling. When the drain is open you van turn on the supply and flush out. Once drained. Reset drain and t/p and fill the tank. Once done turn gas valve from pilot to on. If you dont hear it fire or see flame u may have to relight pilot.

What can I say they’re sacrificial rods needed for the health of an electric unitWas nice that a socket and thread tape was included

Had to return them because we couldn’t access the existing rods to replace them, but these would surely have added double the life to the WH.

Perfect size and cost efficient price! I work in Property Management and some of our water heaters started smelling like rotten eggs. Sure enough the anode rods were starting to corrode. Replaced and no more eggy smell!

Arrived and performing exactly as I hoped it would. Cheap insurance against a premature corrosion failure.

These rods do fit our AO Smith gas water heater.Note: the included socket failed to work with my borrowed impact wrench. Quick trip to local big box to buy a 'dedicated' impact socket worked immediately. If the included socket doesn't seem to work for you, run out and get an impact version. Save time and frustration. If you're handy with tools and knowledgeable enough around gas fired appliances, this should be an easy job. If at all nervous about natural gas, do yourself and your neighborhood a favor and hire a pro. This is not something you want to experiment with!Recommended

There are two sacrificial metal anode rods made of magnesium in this kit. Each single rod is 21 inches (533mm) long. A rod can be securely attached to a metallic bolt that screws into the top of our AO Smith water heater, one that we put in place a year ago. We did not actually install either of these anode rods, however, because when we checked with the manufacturer, we were told that a change of rods would not be necessary for three to five years even though the graphic in the Amazon ad for these rods might lead one to believe that changing out rods should be done more often. Two small rolls of Teflon tape are included in this kit, intended to be wrapped around the threads of the attachment bolt to ensure water-tightness as well as to make installation and removal easier. Even though the Amazon ad stated that no socket would be included, there was one in the package. This was fortunate because the top of the anode rod is about one inch below the top surface of our water heater in a shallow well. This effectively prevents the use of crescent wrenches, slip joint pliers, vice grips, or similar tools for the removal of the old anode rod and/or installation of the new one. Even people who have a socket set are not likely to have a 27mm (1-1/16”) socket like the one included, as this is a size more likely to be needed for heavy machinery repair or in industrial applications, according to my handy-man husband. Because we don’t yet to use either of these anode rods, there is no way to assess the effectiveness of them, and even if we had installed one, it is highly unlikely that there would be any visible change in the appearance of the anode rod until it had been in service for at least a few months. That said, the order came quickly, and the kit was complete. When the time comes to change out the rod, one of these will be what we use. The inclusion of the socket was a helpful bonus.
