When the anode rod is consumed, your tank will corrode faster.

The water tank is in danger of leaking water and you are in danger of being hit! Anode rods are an important part of every water heating system, helping to extend the life of the water heater, improving performance, and providing reliable and sturdy use.

What is the difference between magnesium and aluminum anode rods?

Magnesium rods are more active than aluminum or aluminum zinc rods. It means that magnesium rods will be corroded faster but work and protect better.

How long does the anode rod need to be replaced? - 1 to 2 years.

It depends on the concentration of metal ions in the water, the temperature, the contact area of the water and the exposed iron, the model of the water heater, the frequency of use, and so on.

PS: When you found it is over 75%, it is time to change it.

SAFETY WARNING:

- To extend anode rod life, drain water from the tank whenever RV is not being used.

- Avoid any extended time of non-use with water in tank.

Anode Removal: Turn off the power to the water pump. Turn off the gas supply and the electrical power to the water heater. Be sure the water is cool before attempting to remove the anode rod. To remove, rotate counter-clockwise using a 22mm or 7/8” socket wrench. It may take a lot of force to loosen, especially if it hasn't been removed in awhile. Stand clear when removing the rod, as water may splash. Drain water heater and flush sediments from the bottom of the tank.

New Anode Installation: Wrap threads clockwise with Teflon thread sealant tape or sealing compound that is approved for potable water. Insert new anode rod in drain opening and rotate clockwise to tighten. Turn on the water supply to refill the tank with water. Check around threads at the anode rod for leaks. If there is a leak tighten anode. Turn on gas supply and electrical power.

This a must-have for anyone who wants to protect their water heater and save on costly repairs. It’s a simple, affordable solution that makes a big impact on the longevity of your RV’s water system. The rod does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It attracts corrosion so your water heater tank doesn’t have to. After just a few months, it was time to closeup and winterize our RV. After just one season, you could already see it doing its job with the buildup. Of course the amount of use and water will impact how fast you will need to replace but the last one we used we replaced after two years. But at this cost we could replace each season.

This is what you need for Atwood water heaters because their tanks are made from aluminum and the anode rod needs to be a softer metal like magnesium. Aluminum anode rods are for Suburban water heaters with steel tanks. On my 20 year old heater an anode rod only lasts about 6 months in AZ no matter how much I pay for them. They do the job of protecting the tank but may void your warranty. I flush the tank and install new anode rods often to prolong the life of my unit.
