You get what you pay for... as the cliche’ says. I will tell you why you need to buy these for SAFETY, quality and durability based upon personal experience.When I moved to my apartment somehow the shelf pegs for my china cabinet vanished. I went to the large chain hardware store and purchased a package of them clear pegs (photo 1). Inexpensive, practical, and I thought would never need have to be replaced. About five years ago the purchase was made with no problems. Crystal glasses sat in the glass shelf I thought securely protected.Recently one evening as I sat quietly reading I thought I heard a faint sound of glass vibrating. I felt no “tremor” or earthquake. I listened again, still heard the noise. No children or pets live with me so there was no reason for the sound. I went to the dining area, turned on the light and to my horror the glass shelf inside my cabinet had fallen, it was pressed against the inside of the cabinet, and all of the crystal had slidden to the side. They were still standing upright but I wasn’t sure for how much longer before the shelf totally fell! I was able to slightly open the glass door and retrieve each one individually ever so slowly. Luckily none were broken.In bewilderment I could not imagine how a shelf that had been supporting the glassware for years all of a sudden fell. Ghosts? Surely ghosts. No, after removing the shelf I found one of the cheap pegs I had purchased had broken in half! I do not know why but I assume the plastic became “brittle”.Amazon... open 24 hours a day with a selection of anything (including camelmilk!) equal to none other to my rescue.. I found two styles that appeared to be more durable. (Photo 4) One was total metal and strictly horizontal. The other one was metal but encased in the clear acrylic with what appeared to have more bottom support. I was not sure which to buy so I bought both types. Returned neither one.I have decided to use the acrylic with the metal peg inside. The acrylic seems to camouflage the metal portion. It is much sturdier than the cheap lightweight plastic one I purchased years before. (Photo 2/3)Now SAFETY issue: If you have a bookshelf that holds children’s books or toys do NOT use the clear pegs from your local hardware store, even if they are cheaper. After my experience I will never use the clear plastic pegs for anything! BUY THESE. I cannot imagine what tragedy might occur if a shelf supported by the a cheap plastic peg breaks, the shelf falls and injures a child. Or breaks glassware you value.The total metal pegs without acrylic doesn't have extra support, it is strictly horizontal in shape, in appearance is not as invisible, and you can see where shelf sits it is not as wide as the acrylic/metal combination. (Photo 3)I don’t think the acrylic will become brittle and break. It is acrylic not plastic. If it does break, the metal peg inside will continue to support the shelf until I replace it with my “stash” of pegs!Weight. How much weight will these support? My glass shelf is thick and heavy. The glassware is heavy. I have had no problems. When I placed the peg inside the holes it was a nice tight fit. When I inserted the peg there was not any extra space for the peg to become loose and fall out. As a matter of fact they are much have a much tighter fitting than the plastic pegs.For SAFETY PROTECTION, protection of items on your shelf, sturdiness, durability, composition of material and design BUY THESE.

This is the first time we have ordered this particular shelf pin from this company. I absolutely prefer these pens over the regular metal paddle. We will be using these again with other projects. Only thing is I wish we were able to order them in Bolt numbers of 500 or 1,000

These are NOT 5mm - they are slightly larger and don't fit the holes that other "5mm" pegs fit. The original pegs I had (5mm from Home Depot) were slightly LESS than 5mm and fit snug. These won't even go in - I tried to force with rubber mallet and pliers - no dice.
