11/8/2017 Update - Finally changed the batteries, but only because I was worried about the old batteries leaking due to age. The old ones (Costco "Kirkland" Brand) lasted over 3 years with 2-3 open/close cycles per day.2/18/2016 update - still working great, and haven't changed the batteries yet. I typically cycle this safe open/closed twice a day. Fingerprint sensor has gotten faster & more reliable, probably because I'm more aware of the subtle way to hold a particular finger to open it. Still very happy with this safe.Original Review:I've had this safe for about 6 months now, and I would buy it again. I use it several times a day and haven't had any battery issues yet. I like that you can program several fingerprints into it and that the manual opening is hidden the way it is. I don't know if I'd consider this a fast opening safe or if I'd feel completely comfortable relying on it to open quickly in an emergency, but that could be mitigated by being careful in the initial set-up, I think. From what I understand, there are some fingerprint readers that are easy to fool and some that aren't. The ones that are speedy to open and open every time are, I suspect, also the ones that are easier to fool. This one can be difficult to open sometimes, which probably means it would be difficult to fool, but I have found that there are subtleties to how you hold your finger that make a difference. Different fingers on my hand work better on the safe depending on how hard I push my finger down, likely because that was the way I recorded that finger and didn't think about it at the time. I would suggest being aware of the location of your finger on the pad when programming it the first time and pressing firmly down instead of lightly for repeatability. I would also recommend programming the safe after you place it where you intend to install it. I bolted mine down in a relatively high location, but made the mistake of programming it while sitting with it on my lap on the couch. As a result, my fingers were in a slightly different orientation than when programming, which led to difficulties opening until I figured out some of the subtleties for each finger. Overall, I'm happy with the size, quality, security, and battery life of the unit.

Great product, easy to program and so far has been quite reliable. This is not a fire safe and someone could probably break it open with a sledge hammer and coal chisel. But it would surely prevent "snatch and run" thefts (if properly secured) and will keep the guns away from young hands. The great advantage is you can access a weapon in a couple of seconds, and the process is simple enough to work in an emergency. One great suggestion from another reviewer is to program your preferred fingers a few times, adjusting the angle slightly.Installation notes: It will be easy to secure this safe in a variety of ways. In our dining room we have a built in cabinet. I added an oak shelf (secured with epoxy and multiple screws) and then bolted the safe to the shelf. In our bedroom I wanted more flexibility, so I bolted the safe to a heavy bicycle cable and secured the other end of the cable to a wall stud behind the bed using a long lag screw. I placed the safe on an end table which I can slide around in order the clean the floors. I thought about a wall mount in a closet. If you choose this option, I think the weight of the safe will need to be supported by a bracket or shelf.Update: Two years after purchase and the safes are still working properly. Shame on me, I forgot to replace the batteries when I did the smoke alarms. I'm not a big fan of AA batteries for systems like this, but after two years the safes still opened. I should add a disclaimer that I only open the safes every month or two, so more frequent use will undoubtedly drain the batteries faster. My only observation is that a couple of times it took two tries to open the safes. I think it was dust on the thumb reader or my hands.

After doing extensive research I finally found the Barska, Mini Biometric Safe. It met all our needs. It was reasonably priced. I wanted to secure a hand gun. Secure it from children primarily and curious visitors. This little "safe" has been a perfect choice. It is well constructed, not a tin can. It arrived "triple" packed: a box within a box, within a box.We have several "rings of security" so my primary concern was to secure the hand gun not necessarily have a quick "OK Corral" access. I read the previous reviews and found that many folks were having problems because they did not read the instructions properly. I would suggest Barska consider rewriting the instructions and include some illustrations. I watched the video and understood everything said and done. However a neighbor watched the same video and was totally confused till I explained each "action" in expanded detail. We registered myself and spouse's fingerprints and have tested all prints over 50 times each, just to make sure. If you have never used a biometric reader you may have some issues. Technology is great but biometric readers, especially those sold for retail / home applications are not super-super fast. It may take almost a whole second for the reader to read your print. It is not instantaneous. Your finger has to be reasonably positioned. As far as the interior the little sheet of "fiber paper" is fine. If I decide to store some fragile, sensitive objects I will insert carpeting bottom, back, sides and top of the interior. There was a problem with the order but it was rectified quickly by Amazon and the vendor. The item was ordered 23 April. An email stated delivery was scheduled for sometime between 29 April and 4 May. However 7 May and no sign of the safe or updates on delivery. I sent an email to the vendor through Amazon. I received an email the next day stating the purchase was shipped 7 May. Why the delay in shipping we don't know. It finally arrived 14 May. Because we are very happy with the purchase and the vendor did finally correct the shipping error we still gave it 4 stars.Strongly suggest if you purchase this safe you read and re-read the instructions till you are certain you fully understand what needs to be done. Then make sure you remove the factory settings and register your prints. Then test and re-test all prints registered. Take your time and be patient. Also measure the items you plan on putting in the safe and double check those measurements against the measurements of the safe BEFORE YOU ORDER.Another tip. If you are unable to secure the safe to a wall or floor or piece of furniture right away purchase or borrow an armored cable with lock and secure the safe to a permanently installed item. This is a small safe and can be picked up and moved easilyHope your experience and satisfaction is as good as ours has been.

So I've had this safe for about 3-4 months now. I can say is pretty much what I wanted. I use to have one of those cheap drawer safes from Staples. My 60 year old mother could break into those with a butter knife. It was infuriating.Anyways in glad I actually bought this more expensive barska safe. I don't have any guns. But I do keep my wallet, keys, etc in it. So I use my safe multiple times as day. It needs to work and needs to be simple. I don't want to screw around with it if I'm using it a couple times a day. This thing is great. The biometric works well. I scanned my fingers in a couple of different positions. It does screw up 1/15 times but usually in being lazy with my fingers.Definitely a good mid range safe.

Works better than expected. I really didn't think it would be this reliable. No regrets and I've had it for over 3-4 yrs now!

Bought this for work. The only negative I encountered is the inability to selectively remove fingerprint access--you have to erase all and start over. Other than that, this is a great safe for keys and other small items.
